You selected an unlocked (K) processor but then chose this motherboard. You only want a K processor if you intend to overclock, and if you intend to overclock, you should be getting a Z-series chipset board. However, your budget doesn't allow for either. We'll stick with a cheap board, but for the sake of keeping things less complicated, we'll go with an H97 chipset since H81 may or may not require a bios update to run a haswell refresh chip (never know which vendors have updated boards or not).
If I wanted to try my hand at overclocking, how much would I need to add to the budget to get a better motherboard that would support that?

That's essentially stock with boost, but that voltage seems too high for those clocks. What's your ASIC?
Typo, 1.235mV
1.212 are unlocked voltages with a custom VBIOS flash and I also have a soft mod which brings me to 1.235mV. It a W7 mod for those extra volts, you can find it on OCN, believe the user who created the mod is OccamRazor or OccumRazor.
Now, I can run most games at 1291MHz and 1304MHz on the core but games like FC4 which are eating 2880MBs of VRAM, I rather put 100 to 200 on the VRAM. Found my FPS and the game was much more stable. Highest core clock I can run with ANY amount of OC on VRAM is 1255. So weird, doesn't matter if it is a +25 or +200 OC on VRAM, if the core clock is over 1255 the game driver crashes.
I'm also might be having other issues with my PSU. I've had this Corsair AX1200i since launch and always felt like it was a bit broken with the amount of coil whine it puts out randomly. Another issue I believe giving me issues are all the drivers released by nVidia since Maxwell launch. They have been unusable and not even allowing my cards to go into SLi mode. I haven't looked into other users are having trouble with Big Kepler and the new drivers since the Maxwell launch, so might make time for it sometime today.
I just went off on a few different tangents but could explain on Vent or something this weekend. Would love to talk about Maxwell, I just haven't been free lately.

I believe stock with boost on 780 Tis are somewhere around 1100. Really don't know since they have ran custom VBIOS since Day 1.

Got everything running now. Thanks again for all the help! Still downloading/installing software, drivers, etc. I'll post some pics and benchmarks when I'm done.
In retrospect, I probably should have just bought an optical drive I used my laptop to make my flash drive a bootable win7 installation, and then re-formatted it to transfer network adapter drivers so I could DL everything else But it would have been a lot simpler if I could have just used the dvd's that came with the mobo/graphics card.
On a side note, anyone had any success with IDE to SATA adapters? I got one from a friend and used it with an IDE dvd drive, but it wouldn't recognize the drive. And, it was definitely doing something because my boot would take ~2minutes when it was plugged in, compared to ~15 seconds when unplugged.

Nice! Looking forward to the pics and benchmark.

I'm a little disturbed about my HDD. It came in a static-free bag in an unmarked cardboard box, not in a Seagate box. Did I get fricked?

You would need a 4690K and a z97 motherboard. When I get home tonight I'll look at some microatx motherboard options.

No, you probably got an oem drive. Which just means no retail box or accessories.

I didnt see you got the nexus 6! How do you like it so far (I'm not looking through the 20 page thread )?

Question about the RAM timings:
I changed it to Profile1 and it changed the frequency to 2133 MHz, so that's good. The timings are 10-12-12-28. Is that what they should be for the Mushkin RAM you recommended, or do I need to change it?

RAM settings are correct, you're good to go.

Like it so far. There are a few things I need to either get used to or change. There's a lot more you can do with this phone vs. an iPhone so I imagine it's going to take me a while to get to the point where I love it and declare it superior to iOS.

I thought you were talking about your 980, my bad. I was gonna say, one of my 980s could boost to 1580MHz and the other to 1520. With a modded bios, I can get 1610 and 1550 respectively. Memory is at 2000. Crazy shite. Can't help but be disappointed at the fact that watercooling didn't actually improve overclocks. I hit power and voltage limits. Also, these cards in SLI would really benefit from 8GB.

You're coming from an iphone 4s right? Any phone would be a massive upgrade over that
Posted on 11/23/14 at 1:10 am to bluebarracuda
Yep, a 4s. I knew every choice was going to be a big upgrade, but I wanted it to be the "right upgrade." Something total opposite what I was used to.

Final pic. I swapped the block took out the middle bay for better air flow and re-ran a few wires.

I need to get a pic of mine since I moved into the new case.
It's basic compared to some others posted though.

I've never seen your build.

Because you never come over.
