yeah, for some reason they're a lot more. You can get them used on Ebay for like $10 though.

Gardoki I actually have 3-4 140 Fractal Fans with black sleeved cords. I switched them out for Noiseblockers in my Node 304 and Refine Arc Mini R4.

Talk to me out Steam.

I know it's an amp/dac, so what I'm saying is perhaps I should've just spent the money on something that only operates as an amp, thus getting a better amp for the money, since I experience no noise with my onboard sound.

Also, I already own the Q701s. Came in yesterday, and no, they aren't loud enough. The question is whether the amp will help -- and I only wonder because my motherboard already has a headphone amplifier for headphones up to 600ohm. Still too quiet for the environment I work in because they are open headphones.

I'm not looking for a DAC that's better than my onboard ALC1150, but I also don't want it to be worse.

I say get a DAC even if you believe your stream is clean. I didn't believe my stream was full of noise until using my Modi.

So if this e10 comes in and I notice zero different in noise reduction, will it be because my DAC isn't good enough?

I agree with that.

I was skeptical of DACs a couple of years ago when I first got into audio, but I was pleasantly surprised by how my bifrost and odac improved sq.

ILikeLSUToo, do some A-B comparisons of your inboard audio vs the e10 with your q701 and let me know what your impressions are

Not exactly, on board audio has improved so much over the year and I know you already know this. Your MPower is a top of the line Z87 board and MSI went the extra mile with audio this refresh. Im saying that from the outside looking in, but it has received great reviews.

Actually, since e10 is an amp/dac you can't really isolate the dac for comparison vs inboard audio.

You should get an improvement though, and if you are happy then stick with it

I can't speak for what you may or may not hear through more expensive audio equipment. Audio is very subjective. I'd be willing to let you borrow some of my DACs to try yourself if the e10 doesn't work out.

If your onboard audio is good though, improvement will be less noticeable

If you are primarily using the phones in a noisy environment, I would've went with closed or semi open cans. Open back headphones want a silent enviroment

I wish I could set up a blind comparison. I've spent several days reading really long threads in audiophile forums, and the assessments of different equipment is just all over the place. I don't think I've encountered any technological topic with more conflicting advice. It's pretty telling about the audiophile community in general.

First goal is making the headphones louder. If the e10 does that without making them sound worse than what I have already perceived the quality to be, I'll be fine. What I really want to find out is what the AMP part of it will do that my MSI Mpower's amp cannot seem to accomplish.

Just how loud are you listening to your headphones?

I don't think I've ever had a headphone that I couldn't drive to painful volumes through my laptop

It's very subjective. My best advice is find something and if you like it, never look bad or look for "upgrades"

Save yourself an incredible amount of time and $

Max volume in Windows. I'm going to hook them up to my laptop to see if they are louder.

As I stated a while back, I have some partial deafness, inherited from my dad. But even my wife finds the headphone volume to be only slightly loud when maxed out, and I had her listen to them in a silent environment. In my normal gaming environment at night while the wife is sleeping, the TV is on in the same room, as well as a portable air conditioner.

Sounds like closed headphones would've been a better option for your situation, but I do prefer open headphones myself

Yeah, the need for open headphones outweighed the benefit of sound isolation in closed headphones. I still need to be able to hear the outside world in case of emergency, and I don't like the congestive feeling of closed headphones.

Plugged the Q701s into my piano, and the sound is louder. Also a little louder on my ASUS G73 laptop (and I made sure to disable all enhancements). So I guess the MPower Amp just ain't enough.
