You see it a little all year but don't have an idea of the perfect execution until you play a team that does it 100% (Air Force / Ga Tech) precisely with athletes recruited for that system.

The length of Cuse, plus playmakers on the Off end, these teams don't see it everyday.

We played 2/3 in Biddy Ball it's been around forever. I'm bowing to Boeheim, thought he lost it, but here he is again.

Evidenced by the five 6-7 to 6-10 players he recruits and signs a year

I went to a Nike coaching clinic where boeheim was the key note

Some jack arse asked him about his 2/3 being stuck in the past or something and not working against today's athletes and boeheim said "my athletes are better than your's" and shut the guy down

Most middle school teams can't (and definitely shouldn't) run zones.

Learn to play man.

ETA: At least not 6th grade, maybe 7th and 8th.

I came out of retirement and coached my son's 8th grade catholic school team this year

We ran a 1-2-2 half court trap and fell back into the old temple matchup 2-3. We wrecked teams with that system. Most opponents couldn't tell what the hell we were doing

Won 19 games with one good player and a bunch of spare parts

Great season

I've gotten in this debate here in the past. We run a zone and run it well. Based on our rules of substitutions and such it works and we obliterate teams that try and run man but have zero concept of switching off or help defense.

I mean I have no problem with you destroying teams that can't play D, I just think it's a pretty important concept.

I hate watching 4th graders run zone, it's stupid.

I can see it in 8th grade.

we only ran 2-3 against teams that tremendously outsized us in high school. my coach was from the danny coaching tree so we ran 12 and 42 almost exclusively

Our problem with man is we don't get enough practice time to dedicate to man

If you are a man team in jr high you have to commit to it and if it turns out you can't really do it you have wasted the little gym time you get

So we realized esrly on we didn't really have basketball players but just a few good athletes that played hard. So we fit a system to them that worked

Exactly. 3 hours a week with kids missing practices for travel baseball and soccer too...

You need to learn to play man-to-man.

It's a fundamental concept that has applications when you move to zone. It's the backbone of basketball defense, and it's what the majority of high schools and colleges run, so it's pretty important to know.

At least in my opinion. I understand that learning to play zone is a great skill too, but I think it can easily make players lazy defenders if they use the zone as a crutch at a young age.

ESA

I coached there too
Bourg's first four years
I probably know you

Dave brought man to man push to the baseline principles (dean smith way) to mike at ESA from his time coaching girls HS in Carolina. Until then we all ran push to the middle of the floor like we had Hakeem playing center
