For years, I (and countless fans) have called for more episodes. While we might not get another full slate, HBO on Tuesday announced it will produce a 60-minute “Legendary Nights” documentary that will take a look back at epic Arturo Gatti-Micky Ward trilogy. Gatti, who died in 2099 at age 37, won the second and third fights. They fought three consecutive fights over a 13-month period in 2002 and 2003. The documentary will air this fall, but no date was announced.

Hells yeah. 1st fight was my favorite sporting event Ive watched live on television. It's amazing how close they became after those 3 fights..like blood brothers. Boxing trilogy normally involves 2 fighters who genuinely dislike each other.

R.I.P: Arturo Gatti and Emanuel Steward

This is great news. I was thinking "The Fighter" would culminate with those fights because that's when I truly knew who Mickey Ward was. Those dudes were tied together like Rocky and Apollo. And I don't mind saying that any of those 3 matches were "one of the best fights I'd ever seen" at that time.

I think it would've been sweet for them to get the permission to use the actual footage from round 9 of Gatti/Ward I in the movie. They could've kept the movie exactly the same but, after the movie's final scene, jumped straight to the footage of round 9. They could've shown the entire 3 minute round then jumped to the actual footage of Mickey celebrating in the ring after being named the winner of that fight. Showing that one round would have given validation to the moviegoers who watched the movie without knowing much about Ward beforehand that he really was the all action fighter that the movie depicted.

Agreed. That would have been a very poetic ending.
