States calling a Constitutional Convention

...as opposed to Amendments being set into motion by Congress. It is widely believed States doing this, for no matter what innocuous reason, wouldn't leave well enough along. They would end up doing something as radical as the last time, when the Articles of Confederation were replaced.

I'm not sure I agree they would do something so radical; that they would do any more than their original purpose of calling the Constitutional Convention, but that's a side point.

If the States were to call a Constitutional Convention, to pass a Balanced Budget Amendment maybe, what else would we end up with? An entire new Constitution? What would it look like?

States in the South would be at odds with states in the North and far West. For all its problems, the constitution we have now does a damn good job of keeping the different ideologies under the same roof. To be honest, it would be the beginning of the end of the "United" States IMHO.

So what would happen? You need what, 2/3 of the States to agree to a Constitutional Convention?

This country is far too divided for any good to come of a constitutional convention.

We will have to face failure before we'll make the changes needed to move forward IMO.

If we're talking about by political parties, that isn't close to being true.

You need 2/3 majority of states for a Constitutional Convention, or proposed amendments in the House or Senate by 2/3 vote.

Either way it is proposed, 3/4 of the states must ratify it for it to become Constitutional.

That wouldn't happen if say a convention was called for a budget amendment. I believe 3/4 would agree to that amendment, but other amendments say like repealing the 2nd would not be ratified by 3/4 of our states so I don't think it would be disastrous.

Our constitution is one of the greatest achievements of mankind. You need to get back to studying medicine, then in 6 or so years when you're done you can bone up on history and civilization and rethink your statement.

Maybe we don't need to be under the same roof. Secession was included as a state right for a reason.

Yes, that's 34. You'll need 3/4 to ratify any amendments. That's 38. That is a huge hurdle to overcome.

States have a better chance of self determination through nullification or secession.
