Remington shoots too, you don't even have to pull the trigger every time

re: Remington 700 misfire issues

Was it cold that morning? It is just a simple matter of having gunk in the bolt. Powder residue and oil and the like get in the bolt and gunk up the firing pin spring and the like. Most of the time it isn't a problem, but get a cold morning and it can actually give enough resistance to not fire.

Disassemble the bolt and spray the whole thing down with cleaner/degreaser, put it together and rock on for another 17 years.

If you're not comfortable doing it, bring it somewhere.

Have the entire firing mechanism taken apart and cleaned. It's probably just gunked up.

The CNN 700 deathtrap only applies to modified rifles.

Neither would I and I promise you I've shot more out of 700's in the last three decades than you probably ever will with a Savage. And I can also promise you, that you will NEVER get a savage to anywhere near the level of accuracy you can get a 700.

Enjoy your Savage though.

Didn't they used to be labeled 'Sears'? lol

re: Remington 700 misfire issues

I'm pretty familiar with the issue.

I'm not the biggest 700 fan out there, but to suggest that remington would market a dangerous rifle in this day and age is laughable. Something like that would sink a company almost overnight.

Glad the OP kept his gun pointed downrange. I've had an AD with a custom mauser before and that is most certainly NOT a pleasant experience and I take gun safety to extremes because of it. That said, I'm 100% confident in a well maintained 700.

re: Remington 700 misfire issues

I have 700s with the original trigger assembly that are set down so light you can barely feel them with your finger before they touch off that I have loaded, taken the safety off, and banged the butt on the ground repeatedly to see if I could get it to go off.

Never happened.

The 'problem' with that trigger was people who didn't know what they were doing trying to adjust it and make it lighter. That's user error. That's not the gun.

I have never seen an accidental discharge in a 700 but that's probably because I've never been around people who don't know what they're doing with the slicking up the triggers on them

At this point, it's moot. That new trigger is AMAZING right out the box and you can adjust it externally, and safely, even if you are retarded.

re: Remington 700 misfire issues

Tell that to the families of the dead kids. I dont give a flying frick what u think about CNBC but unless you have something to show it was faked the engineer that designed the gun said on camera he discovered the problem decades ago showed them how to fix it and then they told him to frick off. They fixed it about five years ago and have paid millions to the families that hired the right lawyers. The Goff's in Ruston were one of the those firms and schooled them for years.

As far as you thought about companies doing shite that they knew would kill people, it happens everyday, and I see it all the time, and none of them are ever ruined...... despite my best efforts.

re: Remington 700 misfire issues

All I'm sayin is, if you don't tamper with the firing mechanism it is as safe if not safer than countless other designs out there. Like faxis said, the overwhelming majority of these reported ADs were user error when modifying the trigger mechanism.

All they did by correcting it was make it idiot proof.

If people wouldn't try to pretend to be a gunsmith, none of that shite would happen.

re: Remington 700 misfire issues

It sucks for rem to have their name associated with dead children because of user error and then having to user-proof their product.

Its the world we live in though. I would not hesitate to buy a 1980 model 700. Hell I still hunt with the rifle that AD'd on me. It was my fault, not the man who built the gun.
