I have been having my 700 30-06 for roughly 17 years now. Have pumped hundreds, if not thousands of rounds through it. This year, I was about to shoot a doe, pulled trigger, and nothing happened. Figured I left the safety on, checked and it was off. I had seen the shows about the people killed with misfires, so I kept it on the deer and pushed the safety forward as hard as I could, nothing. Decided to try the trigger again, and as soon as my finger touched the trigger the gun went off. I have never messed with the pull weight so it is set at the factory 7-7 1/2 lbs. No way the pressure I put on it could have made the gun go off. Anyone else ever have this issue?

Sidenote: I kept the crosshairs on her ribs and actually killed the deer, but won't take credit for it

May need a really good cleaning. May be a weak spring. I would definitely take it to a gunsmith during the off season and have that sucker worked on.

My dad's Model 700 30-06 is a little older than yours and he has had no problems. Mine is 10 years old and no problems either.

Have you looked into it? Maybe some buildup on the trigger?

ETA: I absolutely LOVE the Remington 700

I contacted the best gunsmith around and he said he will change out the entire firing mech. I am terrified of the gun as of now and bowhunted the rest of the year, which was fine with me.

The gun has been cleaned several times (won't say religiously) but I am hoping that's what it was. would be a lot less scary. I know lots of people with 700's that have never had a problem, but after looking into it some guns do it once and never again.

Never had problem,
After you shot did you look for a problem?
Was the bolt all the way down?
Did you dry fire it after to see if the problem was still there?

He will prolly just completely clean the bolt and the trigger. Get you a new after market trigger, like a Timney, having a really good trigger will also make you a much better shot.

Timney

That's what I found. I will let him look at it and if he decides to change it that's what I'll get

Sounds like something got in the trigger mechanism not allowing it to fully release.

Might have just been a defective cartridge, ive had one of those and my 700 is only about six years old. But to be safe id replace your trigger, you can get a Timney for about $200, and have a smith crack your bolt open and check it for excessive wear and tear.

While you are at it. If hes going to crack your bolt have him square it with the receiver and pillar bed your stock that should take your rifle to sub moa.

I had the exact same issue.(Felt likr safety was on but it wasn't and trigger wouldn't pull. Put safety back on and gun fired) Brought it home, cleaned it and shot 5 perfects shots. Had an 8pt later in the season and trigger wouldn't pull so I kept cross hairs on it and tried the bolt and safety. Once the trigger did pull I went through 4 bullets all failing to go off when the pin hit soft. Got home and it shot fine.

My dad brought it to a gunsmith and had everything changed out

What issue? Its a 17 year old gun. Some items require maintenance. On a 17 year old gun, $150 for a trigger seems like good investment.

Isn't there some year of production that marked a design change impacting this issue? Or am I thinking of a different gun? I never researched the claims, but I've heard that some are dubious and go back to poorly modified triggers and whatnot?

I have an early model (~mid 60s) that I've always wondered about a potential issue. But, I've never personally experienced any problems.

It was a very big issue with very few rifles. If you are worried just call up remington and ask.

The old 700s and first generation 770s are problematic. The new x-mark pro or whatever they hell they call it is a completely new trigger. There was a piece in them breaking and going off when different acts of the trigger/safety were performed. Even with the military rifles. No need to worry with the new ones.

the trigger assembly and safety are not complicated systems, how is this possible?

From my understanding there is a plate that is part of the safety. When you take the safety off its supposed to move the plate. Some issues they suspected the plaTe would move on its own or hang up. Never seen the inner workings of one so don't really know wtf I'm talking about
