I wouldn't use it until it had a new trigger mech on it just because I can't stand for a gun to malfunction in any way, but that's just me. It could cost you a big buck next time or even worse go off when you don't want it to.

Trust me I wasn't too thrilled when it went off even though I killed the deer. But after playing with it the other day and doing a slight cleaning, there was a marked difference in the firing pin reaction time. That gun has been through hell and hasn't been cleaned religiously. I will definitely be more cautious with it, but I am almost positive the gunk is what was holding it back. Will run 10-15 rounds thru it after cleaning and see how it does. If I notice anything I don't like it will be getting replaced

If that's good enough for you it's good enough for me. There's no doubt that a little bit of trash in the right place can make any gun do some weird stuff.

Back in the day, people boiled their trigger mechanisms in soapy water and then lightly oiled them at the end of every year and during the year if the gun went swimming in a mud hole.

I do it all the time with my shotguns. Triggers, bolts, and anything else that fits in the pot gets boiled if it gets nasty enough.

I'm a little hesitant to play with bolt action rifle triggers because of how they work though, so I've yet to boil one of those.

My brother had the same problem. Scared the shite out of us. He sent it back to Remington, and they fixed it. Sold it soon after. It may be a fine rifle, but I would never buy one because of that incident.
