Need advice on a new PC

Stout suggested that I post here.

My ten year old Dell XPS has reached the limit of what I can do to keep it current. In reality, it reached that limit a while back, but I've been sacrificing quality to avoid upgrading.

I am leaning towards building over buying, as I have a new 1 TB hard drive, CD drives, Monitor/Keyboard/Mouse, software, and possibly Video Card I can cannibalize from my current PC that are all less than two years old. But I want a machine that has the ability for me to adapt to changing specs and will last me a while.

My question is, where to start? I've purchased from Newegg before, and I know they run bundle deals. Is it best to try to piece it together, or go with a bundle? Perhaps another site?

Any help is much appreciated.

Probably <$1000. I want something that will get me current, but leave me the ability to upgrade in the future.

What do you plan to use the computer for?

Gaming. Thats all I pretty much use my desktop for any more.

Bought Heart of the Swarm, and my current machine runs it, but barely. I knew I would have problems. Diablo really was pushing it. I cant run any current FPS on it.

You'll definitely want to build then. What is your current video card? Do you have Windows 7 or above that you can take from the old computer?

I build all the time, just built a mini itx xeon E3-1230 workstation, but for work we check delloutlet on the twitter for good deals on refurbs with warranty. Last year I bought 4 desktop workstations for less than 1200.00 bucks.

Pick a video card ( hierarchy and best at each price range ), and you're good to go. Add your 1TB as a data drive.

eta: As said below, look for a different case... Antec 300 sucks. Coolermaster makes some decent cheap cases. I like the Fractal cases in the $80-100 range.

no reason to buy the K series processors unless you are going to overclock it.

true, but didn't my selection of K series, Z77, and aftermarket cooling indicate my intentions in that configuration? It's so easy to do a modest bump with this architecture without any increased voltage, so why not?

Dont get the Antec 300. That case is horrible.

Also go with a different SSD. Samsung 830, Sandisk Extreme, Kingston HyperX 3k and the vertex 4 are all faster

Possibly upgrade or switch to a different case?

Like Antec 900? shitty cases are terrible to build in

Video Cards are pretty deep discussion on their own and have a huge range. If you are really going to straight game with it on assuming 1080p I would spend the rest of the budget up to 1000 (like you originally stated) on the gpu

you're right. I meant 900. I used to have one. I use a Fractal Arc Midi now.

OP was on the fence between buying and building... i never, ever recommend a novice to do any manipulation at all to the CPU or GPU. they simply dont know what they are doing.

I too would recommend the AMD build over intel, the fx-8350 is pretty awesome for price to performance.

Gives you even more room to through money at a gpu!
