After what happened at the end of Season 3 (the Christmas Special) I'm officially done with the show.

It starts out well but gets worse over time and the season 3 storylines will piss you off. I've still enjoyed watching it and will probably watch season 4.

Loved Season 1. Season 2 moved way too fast through the timeline but was ultimately satisfying. Season 3 is nothing short of a disaster.

I agree about Season 3, but after reading up on why the writers had to do what they did, I have hope that they can get back on track now that that unfortunate distraction is out of the way (trying to avoid spoilers, but the finale was NOT their idea or anything they wanted to do).

Pretty much this. I'm in the middle of season 3 right now and don't really want to finish. I'm a few episodes past the really big thing that happened in the middle, I'm sure I'll get around to finishing eventually

I agree that they didn't have a whole lot of choice when that actor and actress both wanted out. I don't know what type of plot they could have come up with that wouldn't have been out of character.

I was told it was like a soap opera but I watched a season 2 episode (horrible idea I was so confused) and I didn't get that feeling. I don't know I may start the 1st season tomorrow.

What exactly is the premise of this show? I can't convince myself to watch it because of all of the people annoy me post about it on facebook or twitter.

It is about Lord Grantham and his family, including the servants and other workers. Basically goes through the family life through the years. Takes place over a span of years. Begins with the Titanic and moves through WWI and right now season 3 I Believe is in 1920. Someone else might be able to supply a better description this is all I got.

Awesome show. Great dialogue. People that didnt like season 3 need to get their panties out of their arse crack. Sad to see them go, but it's way more realistic that way.

Sort of like Mad Men in an attempt to portray a period of history.

Downton Abbey is doing a wonderful job showing what life was like in England as the monarchy began to lose its power. The servants are the best part of the show as they are increasingly becoming more liberal and more independent.

I know fans will be pissed, but I think the show would be good to move ahead about a decade. Maybe around 1933 as Hitler is coming to power in Germany. I love Granny Grantham, but they could get rid of her. Put some grey hair on Lord Grantham and Lady Grantham and let's see the house serving a different purpose.

It won't do the show any justice to focus on the soap opera storylines. They need to get back to the historical perspective.

Really liked season 1.

The jump the shark moment may have been in season 2 with the titanic survivor story line. The show started to become somewhat implausible and a bit of a soap opera.

Season 3 =

Season two was the worst for me, though I still enjoyed it. I didn't think season three was a disaster at all. Given with the situations/write off they had to do, I thought they handled it well. Season four will probably be a completely show. Grandma keeps getting better by the episode, and the servants plot lines are better. I just need Mosely to catch a break, he's like Tony from The Office.

The problem with Season 3 had nothing to do with writing out characters. It had everything to do with the writing for the characters still there. Lord Grantham becomes a bully and a buffoon. He's practically a villain by the end of the season.

First, I take exception to being equated to the Rant.

Second, this show started out as a well done show that has since completely fallen apart. I don't care that it wasn't planned and that the writers are not to blame. The show has come off the rails. It never really appealed to me in the first place, however, even though I could acknowledge it as a good show.

My wife really liked it I think up until Season 3. Whenever she watched it, even back in Season 1 and 2, I found myself doing other things like, oh, working or going to take a shite.
