so the new pope is a Jesuit, right? Aren't they known for liberation theology? e.g. social justice, making the poor richer by taking from the rich? Wiki'd it: LINK

This guy has spoken of "social justice" on several occasions and hails from a part of the world that has been very receptive to marxism. I'm not enthused.

Social justice or insuring everyone has an equal opportunity seems to me to be something religious leaders should teach to the individual as an example for them to follow. Equal opportunity, equal rights, equal in the eyes of God are all great ideas and I have no problem with a church teaching that. I'm not a Catholic either, but teaching members of your congregation to follow the golden rule seems fine by me.

This guy says differently:
quote:
“Is Bergoglio a progressive — a liberation theologist even? No. He’s no third-world priest. Does he criticize the International Monetary Fund, and neoliberalism? Yes. Does he spend a great deal of time in the slums? Yes,” Rubin said.

From what I've been reading on the guy, admittedly not a lot yet, he seems to reject Liberation Theology.

most Cardianls will talk about social justice, its not all liberal stuff actually some Catholic Social justice is very conservative and leaning libertarian. but someone from a third world country and latin america will have lots to say about social justice.

Theres a different between giving something, and taking it. Social Justice =/= the golden rule. Its also directly the opposite of what Jesus was teaching about giving freely.

there is a difference between catholic teachings on social justice and full-blown communism. you guys would place leo xiii to the left of trostky.

and equally receptive to anti-marxist military dictatorships.

I never said he was a liberation theologist, just that they've been saying he has frequently spoken of "social justice." Now, if it's the literal definition or the neo-marxist definition, I don't know.

Jesuits are not specifically into liberation theology. Latin American Jesuits, specifically, created liberation theology.

True. Of all the orders Jesuits are by far the most educated. And of all the orders Jesuits are by far the most liberal.

Pope Francis was a member of Comunione e Liberazione. It started out as an Anti-Marxist organization, although these days it isn't partisan. I'll also say that Pope Francis isn't a liberal Jesuit. I'm naturally untrusting of Jesuits, but there are still a few good ones out there. That said, from what I know of him, he is a humble, almost meek man who has kissed/washed the feet of AIDS victims, and is known to be in the slums helping out his fellow man.

Well said. The priest commentor called him a saint. I agree. You cannot judge a man by his priestly order in the same way you can't judge all priests as being molesters as some have ignorantly done on these boards.

God forbid we generalize about Catholics. But liberals, blacks, Moslems, etc..., yeah, they're all alike. That's what this board does, generalize about groups of people. dwi

A good bit on both sides do. If you can't beat 'em (or laugh at 'em), join 'em.

Blacks, no. There is only one half-black I despise and that is Obama. Not all half-black, people. I don't call all muslims radicals. Liberals, now that's another story. I only have one liberal friend I tolerate because he buys me seafood. The rest are brain-dead kool aid drinkers that would say, oh yeah! like the cool aid man. Even if, Obama molested little boys admitted it and gave them Michael Jackson Jesus juice. No one here says all blacks are on welfare and voted for Obama; just the same as, not all priests molest. Now, all the news media/alphabet channels are all equal in their mind numbing campaigning for Obama. Guilty as charged, I basically lump them all into one category.

The Jesuits are the "socialists" of the Catholic religion. God help us Catholics...
