Ian Wright/Gus Johnson

I can see how people would disagree with me, but I loved his color commentary with Gus Johnson yesterday.
I like the fact he doesn't have much of a filter. I enjoyed his criticisms of Chelsea fans yesterday, because they have been embarrassing all season and done more harm than good. Good on Wright for calling a spade a spade.
He also provides some semblance of tactical and strategic analysis, unlike most in his seat in the business. Some of it is elementary and he can be repetitive, but a lot of it is actually quite accurate and simple enough to convey over the TV.
Gus is still getting better. I love his energy and voice. But he lacks some basic understanding of the game that shows through often. Considering FSC threw him to the wolves, he's done well.

Gus is getting better with every game, my only gripe from yesterday was him screaming out of my tv 33secs in.
As for Ian Wright he was great but being a former gunner you a could expect him be critical of Chelsea

Well completely missed this thread when commenting in the other.. but
Ian Wright though was absolutely amazing especially for his first co-commentating.
I did enjoy his tidbits on how each player was playing as well, like the bit about Rio letting Cole have at his right flank because he knows Cole has a left foot and nothing else etc etc.
I mean yeah that's easy enough to figure out but even that is more than I'm used to a commentator telling us, and certainly far more than Gus will ever be able to do.

My only complaints about Gus are how he says MATA and every shot he draws out the word FIIIRRREEERRRS.

Ian Wright was fantastic in that game. Would like to see him do more games. Gus is getting better. He still uses the term "crossover". And his screaming, well, that's Gus whether it's soccer, college football, or college basketball.

I mean it's probably just a reference to the whole incident with Terry etc right?

Gus seems like an OK guy and I like him for other sports but like everyone else I definitely don't care for his EPL work. Hats off to him for trying to broaden his horizons but he simply has zero grasp of inflection and and cadence for soccer. And I haven't seen the improvement others are mentioning either. Yesterday seemed just as bad as ever.

His "at the SIX" comment is very annoying.
He's the only commentator that uses that phrase that much.
Granted, I appreciate that he's doing his best.
However, he really should get with someone that is fluent in other languages and learn at least some cursory "inflections". Especially from the spanish and german languages.
His "Ozul" and "Mada" pronunciations were pretty awful.

Wright was awesome in the first half yesterday but lost the plot in the second. I guess he totally forgot that he was blasting Benitez's subs as soon as he brought on Mikel for Lampard and then tried to act like Chelsea fans were morons for not liking the change about 5 minutes later.
Umm, they have ensured we won't have this fat clown in charge of our team next year so actually they have done a lot of good.
Also, how have they been an "embarrassment"? They have done what every other fanbase in the world would do in their situation. A club hero sacked 5 months after winning the CL/FA double and replaced by a guy with a history of disrespect for the club who has since gotten terrible results and made numerous moronic decisions? Of course he is going to get stick. If he wants the fans to stop chanting against him maybe he should stop leaving our best players on the bench in big matches and playing them in meaningless ones.
The thing that annoyed me the most about Gus was how he called attacking moves/goals "good plays".

I thought Ian Wright showed a lot of promise for his first time out.
I don't mind the Gus Johnson experiment, but he needs to lock himself in a room and watch soccer until the world cup starts. I don't think he has shown any improvement in terms of grasp and reading of the game. I also believe he is taking away from casual fans understanding and appreciation of the game. Given that casual fans are clearly the target of this experiment, I think it's fair to call it a failure. If they stick with him, I hope he genuinely makes the effort to improve his knowledge.

Yeah, for a club like Chelsea that gets as much stick than any for bandwagoners and mercenaries I fail to see the "embarrassment" of fans' harassing Rafa. He'd need to arrive to practice with a secret service detail at Roma if he'd had said things like that in the past.

Wright is OK. Can't wait for FSC to get dropped so I don't have to listen to Barton/Wynalda/ and sadly Gus Johnson. Love Johnson for all sports other than soccer.

In his defense he did say something later in the match regarding Benitez obviously knowing better than he regarding the subs.
I enjoyed the tandem. They were much different than the usual commentators that can be more dry.
