Just saw a Good Day to Die Hard and found much
of the dialogue inaudible. Was this problem caused by poor production or a movie theater screw up? I have good hearing and it was loud enough.

Havent seen that but this might be my biggest pet peeve with some movies. "Public Enemies" was a big offender with this (as well as many other things)

Haven't seen that one but it's true for too many movies. I'm deaf in my right ear but have good hearing in my left. Many movies I turn on the subtitles so I can follow the dialogue. Of course having a high quality sound system helps.

The biggest offender for me was Social Network. I had to rewind at least half a dozen times the first time we watched it. It starts in the bar and gets worse in every club scene. Its retarded.

It amazes me how it's not caught in production. I understand they want to pump in the loud music or whatever but the more important part to the scene is what is being said. If I cant get that, then who gives a shite what music is playing over it

There were a few lines in Skyfall that were inaudible due to Craig's accent and the volume of it. Wanted to flip on the subtitles just to see what he said.

Sherlock Holmes was bad about this. The sound effects volume was jacked up as high as the dialogue.

I get that in a bar it would be hard to talk, but in a movie like SN where every bit of dialogue is important to the story, it's incredibly frustrating to constantly rewatch a scene to figure out what the hell they said.

The Artist was the most inaudible for me. . .

The last Rocky Movie.
At the pinnacle of the movie, he gives a speech that is supposed to sway the medical board on his side, but i have no idea what the hell he said
ETA:
Quantum of Solice as well

Good example which was a big detraction from a movie in which I already had marginal interest.

You watched the whole movie right?
Given the quality of the entire film - There's your answer.
Watch the credits...this was not a typical Hollywood flick; most of the technical production and crew were Russian.

...and for whatever reason...though top notch movie...
Fight Club had this problem with dialogue on DVD...the SFX would be incredibly loud but the dialogue would be substantially lower.

I never heard a single word spoken in "The Astronaut Farmer"

What's really dumb is SN was nominated for a Sound Mixing Oscar.

Mann sometimes crams too much detail into his films. He skips stuff he shouldn't to make them more "taut." Casino Royale has the same problem. The upshot is you can enjoy the 2nd viewing more that way.

a lot of movies with that problem or if the characters have weird dialects,I will put on subtitles to catch the small things
