I am really getting fed up on the ammo shortage. I am thinking about starting to hand load for my 9mm.

For those who do hand load (which I do but just for large caliber rifle and shotguns) how hard are the components to come by right now?

Can a guy get a hold of 9mm bullets at all?

Thanks\

You will have a hard time finding components for reloading right now.

really bad time to get into anything shooting related. I have been scouring the net looking for components. bullets are easy to come by and powder/brass are spotty at best but primers are virtually non-existent. I have not seen any large rifle or pistol primers in stock anywhere.

Cabelas had some online a week or so ago.

Once I get settled into somewhere a little more permanent after graduation I plan on investing in reloading, esp for .300 AAC BLk

I have plans to build my own room for my guns and it will include a reloading area. As soon as things settle down i am going to start buying a shite load of components even though i haven't bought a press yet I have a few friends that reload and looks like it would be a relaxing hobby that plays into my ammo hoarding perfectly...

Not really new to the game, just have not reloaded handguns before.

Thanks for the answers everyone.

Here is the vicious cycle...

government says the word "ban" -> people freak out -> people hoard ammo -> reloaders hoard reloading supplies

But the problem is that reloading supplies are stocked at a lower rate than loaded ammunition.

Couple that with the fact that all primer production is going to new ammo production right now, and the answer becomes even more obvious.

I love reloading and I strongly suggest it, but we won't see primers for about 6-9 months when the craze finally calms down.

I'm not going to forget how to shoot in the 6-8 months it will take for the tards to stop panicking and stocks to return.

I don't buy this. They have production lines. I assure you their primer line has a higher unit capacity than their finished cartridge line. Their primer lines are designed to meet the demand of their cartridge lines AND reloader stocks.

Several companies have put out very clear statements detailing this.

Yep. Primers were hard to find four years ago right after Obama was elected the first time. Cabelas was out and backordering them took several months to get all the primers I wanted. This time may be a little worse.

You just proved my point with this statement.

Ammo demand >>>>> reloading demand

RELOADERS… ALL Remington, Winchester, CCI & Federal primers are going to ammo FIRST. There are no extra’s for reloading purposes… it could be 6-9 months before things get caught up. Sorry for the bleak news, but now we know what to expect in the coming months. Stay tuned, we’ll keep you posted…

Does anyone here actually buy primers online? I see no reason to spend an extra $25 on hazmat fees.

EDIT: Also notice on that page that Tula primers are the only ones fully "in stock."

DO NOT BUY TULA PRIMERS! They absolutely suck. I bought 1000 of them right when the shortage started and they have had a worse failure rate than a bulk pack of 22 and unfortunately I'm not kidding.

Components availabiiity is HORRIBLE right now. In some ways, avaiability problems are even worse for handloaders than those buying loaded ammo. As far as priorities go, components for handloaders is at the bottom. The handloader has to have brass (not to bad here as long as one has a lot of brass already available), bullets, powder and primers available. I ordered 1K bullets recently and had to wait 2 months for them. Fortunately, I didn't need them at the time, but was just building up a stock. One of the bullets I ordered was not available; they said those bullets would be out of stock for 3-4 more months!

The biggest problem for the handloader is primers. There are only 4 companies in the US that make primers. I've never used any foreign primers so I can't vouch for their availability or quality. I bought 4K primers right after Sandy Hook and already wish I had more. If you do find primers, be prepared to REALLY pay for them. I understand there's a store in Bossier that has primers, but is charging 1 1/2-2X the usual price. If one resorts to mail order/internet buying, one then has to pay shipping PLUS the $20 hazardous shipping fee, adding to the expense considerably...... It's a sad time right now for anything shooting related......unless you're in sales!

Not really.....The ammo makers are already running at full capacity plus. I don't think they can push it any further. OTOH, like a number of businesses, given the current business/government uncertainties, I don't anticipate the ammo makers will be adding new production shifts or equipment which would be the only they they could significantly increase production. Components will always be at the bottom of the hierarchy when it comes to availability. The only thing that will take care of the shortage is going to be the resolution of the panicked buying. When's that going to end??????
