In your opinion, who personifies the image in your mind as "the great American rock band"?
In the modern era, I think I have to with Wilco.

The Beach Boys & The Doors are the 2 greatest American rock bands of all time IMO. If each country in the world had to choose one band to represent their musical history, I'd want it to be one of those 2.

CCR lacks the longevity. But I think the defining element of American rock is that it is fiercely independent and does not need industry support. It continues regardless of trends.
In that vein, REM. Maybe the Replacements.
