When you factor in critical acclaim, longevity, popularity, universal appeal, and cultural significance the answer is Pearl Jam. I just discovered recently that they have never released an album that didn't peak inside the top 5 on the Billboard charts.

See, and on that rubric, I think it's REM. Or the Beastie Boys, if they qualify as a "rock band". I think they do, but I have a far more expansive definition of rock n roll than most people.
And let me also join those who hate the Doors with an unrelenting passion.

Nope. They are critically acclaimed, and have even released one of the seminal albums of their genre (Paul's Boutique). They are popular, with multiple hit singles and lots of record sales. They are influential, as they are one of the groups most responsible for the rise of hip hop. And they had extreme longevity, last from the mid-80s up until MCA's death last year. And, as bonus points, they made a huge cultural impact with the Tibet Freedom Concert, which they headlined.
Oh, and they are flat out great, and have a pretty diverse recording library, going from snotty punk to frat boy rap to sampling gods to ironic hipsters back to defenders of the old school. They didn't just stay in one place, they pushed things forward, right up until the end.

I say it is as if it's a thing that happened. Though I do dislike what hip hop has become, mainly due to the fall of the MC. No one has any flow anymore -- it's become a producer's genre, like disco. (I know there are exceptions, I'm speaking in general).

Only reason I didn't say Grateful Dead is simply because I don't think they touch as much of the country as Allman Brothers.
There really aren't many Dead fans down here. Conversely if you go where there are a lot of fans (California, northeast) there are a ton of ABB fans too.
Grateful Dead are my favorite band, but lots of people don't really appreciate or listen to them.

I didn't go thru this whole thread, but my vote goes to Guns 'N Roses. I know that one article posted a while back had LZ as the archetype rock band, but for me, when i think of 2 bands that epitomize rock 'n roll as i thought of it growing up, the music, the attitude the life style, its The Rolling Stones and Guns N' Roses.
