I think Aerosmith wins here. Although, Van Halen is also an excellent choice.

They both represent "rock" in the truest sense of the word, have the longevity, and are universally known, loved and respected.

I want to include Guns N' Roses badly but just can't do it.

CCR, and they aren't my favorite. Just can't think of anyone I could put above them.

I'd go with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

CCR
Beach Boys
Replacements
REM
X
Minutemen
Big Star
Velvet Underground
The Ramones

Wilco - modern day...

That's an outstanding list. Throw in the Pixies and we have a deal.

Metallica is the greatest American rock band of all time, and there isn't a close second.

Understandable opinion, but as big as they were/are, never had the universal appeal across the spectrum of generations of an Aerosmith or Springsteen.

The "Great American Rock Band" can't be a band that hardly anyone knows about..

I don't much like Wilco, but they've won two Grammys and have been nominated for five. They've had several albums on the Billboard charts and they are constantly in the music press. If you haven't heard of Wilco, that's a reflection on you, not the band. They aren't ubiquitous, but they are a soldily mainstream band that many, many people know about.
