OT runners: iliac crest pain when running??

I've been having iliac crest pain for 18 months now ... started running 1 year ago so I know running didn't CAUSE it. After multiple times of asking if I was ready for an MRI and me saying no for insurance reasons, I'm having one done next week.

Did a 10K 2 weeks ago and after 2 miles that area was screaming at me every time my foot struck the ground. Got taped and oral steroids (that's the only thing that EVER made it go COMPLETELY away even if just for a short time) so that I could do my first half last Sunday (although the it band flared up).

Anyone else ever had this?? Haven't run in a week and my poor family I think is ready for me to be able to get back to it.

always try rest, ice and NSAIDS first. and by rest I mean rest for a couple weeks. If still no improvement, you might want to see an ortho. preferably one who specializes in sports med. they should either have you get a pelvic/hip xray and then examine you or they will examine you then get xrays. After that if further examination is needed then a MRI will be needed which should tell them whats wrong if anything other than inflammation.
You could always make sure you are wearing the right shoes as well, by being fitted.

Which part of the crest? Closer to ASIS or PSIS? No initial trauma?

No, no inital trauma that I can remember. Started hurting with EVERY step I took about 18 months ago.

It's ON the bone intself ... not sure about those initials and right under it.

I've iced and iced ... nsaids and rx anti inflammatories don't help. Like I said the only thing that EVER made it go COMPLETELY away was a steroid dose pack but then it came back. I swear prior to getting the first dose pack I was convinced I had bone cancer.

And regarding the shoes, I got fitted/evaluated at a running store 9 months after the pain started when I began running. Put me in Brooks Glycerines ... at the RNR half in NOLA I had the Brooks people do another evaluation and they said I'd been fitted correctly for the type of shoe (neutral).

Then why the frick are you running so much? Sounds like you are a glutton for the pain if your fricking hip hurts so much and then you start running. Stop performing an exercise that inflicts (non-muscular) pain and injuries and start performing exercises that increase your fitness without damaging your health.

Yeh if youve done all than then you need to quit running at least for a month or so.... we tell our pts all the time if it hurts then quit doing it. you could seriously injury yourself if you keep it up, which could lead to a painful surgery.

I'm on rest for now ... but I'm puzzled as to the reason it ever STARTED hurting in the first place, about 9 months PRIOR to EVER running.

For a while it hurt only AFTER running ... kind of a burn type thing. Only in the past 3 or so weeks ...

Tried everything else ... MRI next week. Was just wondering if anyone else had HAD this and what the dx was.

Only think I can think of is build up your core. How often do you do core strengthening exercises?

the capsule/sheath that is around your hip/femoral neck area could have been inflammed and the lack of rest could make it chronic....

Try this quick exercise. Reach as high as you can on the same side as the side of your pain and hold it for 20 seconds and do it for 3x for 20 sec hold each time. Then reach as high as you can on the opposite side and see if the pain has reduced. If it does reach as high as you can again on the same side as the side your pain is on again and do it 3x for 20 sec hold each time and then reach as high as you can on the opposite side and see if the pain has reduced any more. It may help and it's worth a shot. Let me know how it goes.

Please provide a precise localization of your pain: front of the waist, side of the waist, etc.

Thanks.

Could be that.

Or, hip abductors compensating for a weak core or other weakness.

Or, big Q-angle.

Sounds like periosteal pain either way. Possible avulsion.

You might need a hip scope if you have a torn labrum. Working in surgery and seeing these done, they look painful. But I know someone who had it done and has just sated running 8 months post op

Try incorporating 2-3 tbsp of Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar into your daily routine. I get it over with in the morning. Besides it's hundreds of other benefits, it's also very useful in joint/bone pain and is beneficial to muscles as well. Try this, you should see results within a week or so. It could save you a lot of $ if it helps you avoid doctors. It will also get you back running more quickly. .

re: OT runners: iliac crest pain when running??

Well this did nothing ...no pain either side while reaching. Thanks though.

G Vice it's on the SIDE and a little under but not more toward front or back .. literally the side of the iliac crest bone ... when walking it hurts when my foot hits the ground. When runnign the same. When laying on that side at night it hurts. Sitting in a chair if I lean to the "good" side to pick something up it hurts. When I sneeze at times it hurts. To get in and out of my Expedition at times it hurts.

Like I said this was before I ever started running so that didn't CAUSE it ... but it hurts more when running now than it did before (didn't hurt during but after the run). And don't get me wrong .. it's only been an intense pain lately when I run ... other than that it's been more of a this is not normal and it's frustrating as hell kind of pain.

I could I know live with it but hell I'm only 43 and it's "not normal".

Apple cider vinegar? Yuk but I have read about that before.

Yes. Sounds crazy, but honestly it wouldn't hurt you to try. It is kinda icky but don't be a wimp, little old ladies drink it everyday and don't complain. You will get used to it.
Tbsp or 2 - shoot, chase with water. If you don't want to shoot it (or can't deal with the taste), add 1tbsp to 8oz water with 1tbsp raw honey.

If it doesn't help your injury, which I believe it will, it will boost your immune system, energy levels, and metabolism, to name a few.

Just finished my shot alongside a glass of fresh honeydew melon and kale juice.
