Maybe he's on mobile or something. The OP could have quoted some important parts of the article so people on mobile don't have to worry about opening up new pages and shite.
On my phone and actually working. I don't have time to try to read through a long article on my phone. I barely know how to call someone. And like I said before, I thought the answer was simpler than it actually was.

you thought measuring the speed of something billions of miles away would be simple?

You thought the answer to the question of how fast a black hole is spinning would be simple?

I barely know how to call someone

No, which is why I asked my initial question. I just didn't realize that it would take an entire article to answer my question.

To be fair, it was only this part of the article:
quote:

While black holes are difficult to detect, the region around them gives off telltale X-rays. Using NASA's newly launched NuStar telescope and the European Space Agency's workhorse XMM-Newton, an international team observed high-energy X-rays released by a supermassive black hole in the middle of a nearby galaxy.

They calculated its spin at close to the speed of light — 670 million mph.

And it was at the beginning of the article.

To be fair, I've already stated that I didn't click on the link. Usually the OP will quote portions of the article so that one doesn't have to actually open the link. Sorry for inconveniencing all of you. At least you all got a good laugh out of me this morning

re: Black hole spins at 670 million mph

You people realize it's not really a "hole", right?

that depends on how you define "hole." Is a hole something that gravity pulls you down into (with "down" being defined as a have your position moved from farther away from the center of gravity to closer)?

If it is, then a black hole is a hole.

If you definition of hole is a void on a surface or mass, then a black hole is not a "hole." A black whole is anything but a void, it is a super dense area of space-time where the known properties of the universe break down.
