the astro turf fad was over. people had realized how stupid it was. and then the rays come in with field turf. im not telling people how to run their program, just dont expect me not to look down on them for having a field terf baseball field. looks ridiculous.

Whether we like it or not, money is a big issue for most schools. The turf is a one time cost of about 1 million that will last 15 years at least (or so they say). You could buy alot of sand, dirt, paint/chalk, and diamond dry for that money but you have to factor in the labor costs. In the long run it's probably cheaper for the turf. I love a grass field, but I'm glad I don't have to maintain it anymore. My favorite grass field is USM, it is usually in awesome shape.

somehow for years on years they managed to have grass fields. i undertand it may be cheaper, but you can sell the "money is such a huge issue" bs to someone else.

Well being involved with field maintenance, it is. Grass fields aren't all nice, heck the old Alex Box was terrible if you want to be honest about it.

it would be huge for you and me. a university can figure it out. its a copout excuse. the old box had great fields to start with. by the end of the season though you can tell a difference.

Small budget meant no grounds crew which meant players and coaches getting there early to work the infield.

besides the main guy in charge (who's also in charge of Tiger Stadium) and an old guy here and there, most of the grounds crew is unpaid beyond a meal ticket at LSU.

The old grass surface at Moore Field used to slope downward about halfway between second base and the center field wall. Rather than leveling the field out, they installed turf instead.

think of the money saved by a turf field as a pay raise for the coach

Actually it is very similar to grass. How exactly in your experience did the ball play different?
