Maurepas Foods in the Bywater

I searched and didn't see much chatter about Maurepas Food on the FD Board.

Had a late dinner there last night and it was probably my best meal of 2013 thus far.

Our group started with the brussels sprouts, grits, and cheesy bread (whipper butter, gruyere). Everything was fantastic. The brussel sprouts converted two non brussels sprout eaters. The grits were some of the best I've had, and the cheesy bread is just what you want out of cheesy bread.

I ordered the Shrimp Hotpot for my entree, along with a side of the grits. I really don't even know what "hotpot" is, but according to google it's a Mongolian type soup? The hotpot was served with a big, fat biscuit resting on top. The broth was excellent, as was the andouille and mushrooms that accompanied the shrimp. Just an all around great dish. The rest of the table had the chicken and someone also had the pork shoulder. They were both tasty as well.

We also indulged on some of the specialty cocktails. I had the Hairy Barfly, which was a bourbon/vermouth/scotch/bitters concoction. Very good. The females had the Parse Through Pursed, which was a gin, honey, lime, parsley mixture. They each had a few, so they must've enjoyed them.

Overall, great meal and experience. It's a little hipsterish and pretentious, but it is to be expected given the location. The prices are affordable and the quality is excellent. I would recommend it.

I actually ate there Friday night. Awesome cocktails. Started with the cheese plate and I also got the shrimp hotpot. Someone else at the table got the lamb meatballs and pasta and it was so freaking good. And the prices were very reasonable.

I've eaten there several times in the past couple of months. It is one of my favorites in the city. The prices are low for the quality of food.

What did you think of it?

Maybe I was just surprised because I ordered it off of a whim, but I thought it was great.

I had it on recommendation from a friend. Thought it was good, but they were a little skimpy on the broth.

This intrigues me. I want to like Brussels sprouts but just can't. I'm interested to try this place.

I've only eaten there once for lunch .. got the pimenton sausage sandwich and it was excellent. Have also heard the goat tacos are boss. Need to get over there again soon .. but it's the Bywater. Not my first choice of area to hang out.

Give them a try. Not only are Maurepas's version visually appealing, they are cooked and seasoned to perfection.

Which is why I never made it out there sooner

No matter how you slice it, Bywater is sketchy.

Hell, I was at Mimi's Friday night and some dude got held up down the block.

The Bywater is killing it right now with new restaurants, but its not a place I "hang out" in. I go, park nearby, eat, and gtfo.

This.

It's not really conducive to "hanging out" unless you live within walking distance.

Yeah, a cop is fighting for his life right now after being shot in the Bywater this weekend.

They are killing it. Better make it lunch.

The place is in a safe area. I live 2 blocks down from it. Given the proximity to me, I'm a regular there, and I've yet to have a bad or mediocre meal. Plus, the craft cocktails are awesome. Only negative is that the wine list is a little light on selections.
On weekend nights, the wait for a table can get a little long. I would also recommend two other places, which are very similar in food concept, and are within 20 yds of Maurepas: Sui Generis, which is right across the street (not as nice of an atmosphere) and Booty's, which is around the corner (intersection of Louisa and Dauphine - extremely similar in atmosphere and food, but menu options are more limited).

What are your thoughts on Sui Generis? I've been interested in trying it out but never hear anything about it.

re: Maurepas Foods in the Bywater

I like it, but the food is not as good as Maurepas. Don't take that as a sign that Sui's food is bad, its just that Maurepas is a damn superb restaurant, and since the prices are roughly the same, I usually go to Maurpas. But, you'll get a good meal at Sui (they make wonderful ravioli, sometimes with lobster). In terms of preferences, I rank them as follows: 1. Maurepas; 2. Booty's; 3. Sui Generis. Also, Bacchanal, is very close by (on the end of Poland by the river) and they just opened an upstairs, indoor dining area. They are producing some really good food these days, also at inexpensive price points. Plus, Bacchanal's wine selection and pricing is damn hard to beat.

And, for what its worth, I was mugged in the Marigny - on Frenchman and Royal, right across from the Marigny Brasserie. Haven't had a single issue in the Bywater.
