Marxism is a theory of history. Many historians are Marxists in one way or another.
And liberals / progressives aren't Marxists.

What do you mean by "history books?" If you mean history textbook, then rarely. My students do alot of primary and secondary document analysis. We use the textbook some, but the european ethnocentric narrative is not something with which I am in love.

History books are narratives, not explanations. Historian take evidence available, reconstruct events based upon that evidence, then narrate why they believe those events took place. I guess you can call it explanation, but that is oversimplying the process.
