Our halfcourt offensive sets need to improve for us to be more competitive the rest of the season and next year.

The vast majority of our halfcourt sets involve a ballscreen at the wing area. We then rely on Hickey or Stringer to create something off the drive or jack up a three off the dribble. Our ball movement is putrid since we let one of those 2 guys dribble around and look to penetrate for a chunk of the shot clock. Our movement and screen action away from the ball is almost nonexistent except for a couple of sets.

We did a decent job of feeding O'Bryant, but I feel like it would be even easier with better ball movement and screen action away from the ball to create passing lanes.

On defense we did a poor job of challenging shots at times. I am surprised we didn't go no help on McRae once it was pretty obvious he was on fire.

Don't want to make this a complete negatiger post. I am happy with the mindset, tempo and recruiting Jones is bringing to the program. I am just curious about some of the strategy, especially in our halfcourt sets.

This is true.

One of the positives that I took away was that Hammink and Collins were both needed tonight and both logged some positive minutes.

Combined:

0 pts
0 rebounds
1 Asst.
1 TO
4 Fouls

I wouldn't exactly call that "positive" minutes. Right now the game looks way too big for Hammink, and Collins is in so much of a hurry to make something happen that he turns it over. Still plenty of time in their careers for improvement, but I don't know how much LSU can coun't on them this season.

Aside from that, if LSU plays Sat. like they did last night, they should win going away. Plain and simple, it was UT's night. Bama will defend better than UT, but they won't come close to shooting that well.

Was able to sit down and watch most of this game for the first time all year. Team played really well. TN just shot lights out. A couple careless mistakes here or there, but went shot for shot with them for most of the game.

I somewhat agree with you. However, our cutting into the lanes following a dribble penetration was really nice last night at times. The big problem was not being able to control the ball and finish. And the type of system where there is off the ball movement and screens takes time to implement and do correctly.

Positive in terms of both have struggled and neither made any real mistakes which allowed the Tigers to keep it close against a team that couldn't miss. They were solid role players, I wasn't suggesting they were super stars, but both exceeded my expectations.

On defense, you have to look at it from the perspective of lesser of two evils. Tennessee is known for their driving and penetrating offense. McRae was only shooting 29.8% on three point baskets this season before the game.

The gameplan was to keep the defense inside and try to prevent penetration. For the most part we took that away from Tennessee. We just so happen to get caught on a night where a guy who was 31 out of 104 hit 6 of 6....

Hindsight is 20/20 but I think we did exactly what any coach would want to do on Tennessee. Give them the outside shot (albeit we could have defended them better) before you give them the penetration.

On offense, I think we did a great job of working through Johnny. We shot relatively well and had one of our best nights inside the three point line of the season. We hit 14 of 18 free throws which has been a major issue on the year. Sometimes the offense was a little stagnant, but I think that is going to happen when your goal is to work through the post. You have to wait for the post player to get the position needed to have a good move work.

While we didn't play good enough to win last night, I think we played one of our better games on the year and we could have beaten any team in the SEC with that performance given they dont shoot 67% from deep and 53% from inside.

I saw the game the same way as you did. In the game thread, some were saying that CJJ did not prepare the team well. I completely disagree with that assessment. LSU scored the ball well enough to win. On defense, LSU wanted to force them to win the game on the peremeter. That is exactly what Tenn. did. I can't really think of a game where an opponent stayed hot from the outside for an entire 40 minutes. Again Tenn. did just that.

We forced some turnovers with the press and I thought it helped us. Morgan's foul trouble and Carmouche not being available created more problems for us. LSU just doesn't have enough parts to overcome the loss of personel like that. Collins and Hammick are just not ready to play extended minutes at this time. However, fans should be patient with them. They are being asked to do things they are not ready to do on this level. We all knew this season is more about laying the groundwork for the future.

As for the refs, they were terrible as usual. As you mentioned,, both teams got their share of bad calls. I think the general philosophy of the SEC officiating stinks. It makes for boring basketball and doesn't prepare the teams for the tournament. A good example is Morgan's 5th foul. He barely touched the guy 35 feet from the basket. It did not cost Tenn a turnover and it did not knock the Tenn player off his spot. I think the conference should be embarrassed by the refs they put on the court. This is not an LSU thing, it's a league thing.

Is there anything scarier than when Del Piero gets in trouble in the post? He makes too many lazy passes and more times than not, it's going to be a turnover. He's got to be more careful and patient when kicking the ball back out.

As a coach JJ is getting similar results to some of Daddys lesser teams in terms of personnel. He has turned the trick in terms of willing the players to play above what the sum of the parts would seem possible.

1 thing at a time. He has been really working hard on decent post moves. The last few games he has shown them. I'm sure now he can start to focus on another part of his game. It's amazing how far he has come, but his 1 turnover definitely could have been a better pass. He is still improving every game. It is very clear he has a bright future in basketball (European ball). I love watching him progress and I am happy for his improvements.

That ADP dunk was epic.

My only change would have been to press more. We seemed to catch them off guard with the press and created several turnovers. I know the team is tired with 3 games in 6 days, but I think that possibly could have kept it a little closer. Either way, this team played great! I would not have expected this quality of a game from this team back in November.

Bottom line is, most teams will win if they shoot 10/15 from three...especially when it's just a small part of the total scoring.

We do need to press more though, it seems to work well against everyone.

Tennessee was able to get some very easy looks when we were pressing. That coupled with the fact that Morgan was in foul trouble and Carmouche was unavailable probably had a lot to do with the call.

Like I said early, it's easy to look back at what happened and blame coach, but I think the team came in prepared and for the most part executed, but lost to a more talented team who shot amazingly.

Sometimes I feel like I am watching a different game from some people. I missed the first 12 minutes of the first half, so I missed his one turnover on the night. However I saw a lot of offensive rebounds and passes out to guards that were more than fine. I also saw a team that rarely looks to pass to him in the post and does a bad job of it when they do. The 25 foot inbound pass from the top of the 3 point line to the low post is a particular pass that should never happen.

The key to passing to a 7 footer in transition or in the paint? Pass it high. Passes to his shins are going to be difficult to catch.

Honestly they should pass to him more. I think his free throws are looking good of late, he gets a lot of fouls on the other team, and definitely draws attention away from JOB.

Yea I think Del Piero had a very good game. I wasn't upset on his one turnover, though it was a bit lazy of a pass. I do however get that "feeling" that he will make a mistake anytime his initial move doesnt work.

I love what he has been able to do and early I think he made a significant difference on defense as a shot blocking threat.

He rebounded much better last night than usual and I have been more than impressed with the work the coaching staff has done with him this year.

This is more what I was getting at. Nevertheless, he looked better last night than he did the last couple of games. The dude has come a long way, it's been amazing to watch

Teams seem to be better prepared for it as the season goes on. I am sure that 50% of the practice time in the days before a team plays us is spent on breaking the press.

I would like to see the team have a simple zone they can go to for small stretches next year. You could see the concern from Tennessee's coaching staff when we first showed zone.

I think I have to disagree here. I think they had more easy looks on their half court sets than in the press. Like you said earlier, the half court set defense was to give them the 3 because they were so poor coming into the game; however, they made several poor passes that led to TO's and steals with the press.

Again, I don't think we win this game either way, and LSU played really well, just "Monday morning quarterbacking" a little.

I think once people get a look at the press they will be able to beat it occasionally. That being said, I still love when we use it. LSU players seem more zoned in and active whether it on offense or defense when they are playing the press. Mentally I like the way they play when pressing.

And I think LSU caused a lot of turnovers in their press. I think it either gives our opponent a pretty solid look, or it is a turnover. I'll take my chances more times than not in our press.
