Biggest screwup in sports history?

My nominee: Tom Osborne in the 1983's Orange Bowl/NC game Nebraska vs. Miami
All he has to do is kick an XP to tie the game, which win the national title for Nebraska.
Instead he goes for 2, fails, loses 31-30 and Miami wins the NC.
For some reason this decision has disappeared from the collective sports memory. You still hear about Bill Buckner, but IMHO Osborne was far worse. It wasn't an instinctive play in the middle of a game, but a conscious, thought-out decision.

The Georgetown player inbounding to the opposing player in the NCAA tourney was pretty huge. I'm too lazy to look it up, but it was in the eighties when the Hoyas were dominant.

I thought it was the absolute correct call and I'm glad he went for it. I respected Tom Osborne all the more for it. You either deserve the title or you don't. Play for the win. I think it's the single BEST call in sports, because it shows a philosophy I whole-heartedly endorse. No shortcuts. He didn't try and take the cheap way.
And the biggest screw up is Merkle's Boner. Just because it's fun to say.

Bartman isn't close. Not his fault they continued to choke. Plus he's a fan. He paid money to be there. Not the other way around. Most people would probably do the same thing.

It was in the national title game after Jordan hit the winning shot. Hoyas had another possession but the guy absent mindedly passed directly to James Worthy around half court

Bill Buckner was the first thing that popped into my head, though I'm sure there are lesser known, but worse screwups, it just seems this one has been drilled into everybody's heads.
