What should be the government's role in this situation?
This woman I know is married. Her and her husband have 5 kids, including a 6 month old baby. Husband worked, she stayed home. She never graduated high school.
They had just enough money to get by.
Then, the husband quits his job, and deserts them.
She now has to find a job and raise 5 young kids by herself. Having not graduated high school, her job choices are very limited.
What is the solution?

Some people will help them. She will figure something out. I'm also not against him being legally liable for financial support providing he doesn't go completely off the grid.

Also this. Libertarians are typically big fans of enforcing contracts. In a libertarian world, I imagine it would be a breach of contract to abandon your children without offering financial support.

Of course... but what if there isn't enough charity to help? Do they die on the street?

That's right, it should be just like the good old days when my dad was a kid. He dropped out of school at 13 to get a job to help support the family.

None of us can predict the future. She could have a heart attack the day after and the children could be parentless. You can keep on qualifying the example, but the role the government should play doesn't change.
