| You're starting a franchise. Choose one: Prime LeBron or Prime Shaq (Posted on 2/15/13 at 5:46 pm)
Here's what Shaq did during his three NBA Finals wins with the Lakers:
quote:
2000 -- Shaquille O'Neal, L.A. Lakers Averaged 38.0 points, 16.7 rebounds and 2.67 blocks to lead the Lakers to a 4-2 victory over the Indiana Pacers and the franchise’s first NBA Championship since 1988. O’Neal’s best Finals performances came at the Staples Center with 43 points, 19 rebounds in Game #1, 40 points, 24 rebounds in Game #2 and 41 points, 12 rebounds in Game #6. 2001 -- Shaquille O'Neal, L.A. Lakers Averaged 33.0 points, 15.6 rebounds and 3.40 blocks to lead the Lakers to a 4-1victory over the Philadelphia 76ers and the franchise’s second consecutive NBA Championship. O’Neal’s best Finals performances came at the Staples Center with 44 points, 20 rebounds and five assists in Game #1, 28 points, 20 rebounds and nine assists in Game #2 and 34 points, 14 rebounds in Game #4. 2002 -- Shaquille O'Neal, L.A. Lakers Averaged 36.3 points, 12.3 rebounds and 2.75 blocks to lead the Lakers to a sweep of the New Jersey Nets and the franchise’s third consecutive NBA Championship. O’Neal’s best Finals performances came at the Staples Center with 36 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks in Game #1, 40 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in Game #2, 35 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks in Game #3.
Here's what LeBron did during his first NBA Finals win:
quote:
James averaged 28.6 points, 10.2 rebounds and 7.4 assists in more than 44 minutes per game over the course of the five-game series victory. He made 51 of 108 field-goal attempts (47.2 percent) and 38 of 46 free throws (82.6 percent). After posting a triple-double in the Game 5 win — 26 points (9-for-19 shooting), 13 assists, 11 rebounds
quote:
In the title-clinching Game 5 triumph, James again went for 26 along with 11 rebounds and 13 assists. In every game in this series, he scored more points than he had in any game during his previous trips to the Finals. Similarly, he's produced career Finals bests in rebounds and assists, too.
And LeBron will obviously add to those numbers. theunkownknight, feel free to chime in.

The drop off at the center position is the greatest.

Shaq, though I'd consider myself a blessed GM to be starting out with either of them

Shaq without a doubt. The other starting 4 could have skip Bayless talent and there isn't a center in the league that will stop him.

Shaq, but that doesn't mean Shaq is better, if that makes sense. He's just the most dominant player in the modern era.

Lebron, only because with Shaq you still need another guy to get him the ball. Lebron got to the finals pretty much by himself, if Cleavland had just put decent talent around him they could've won a few titles. Also since Shaq's career is now over, you can look back and see that his prime wasn't that long, Lebron will probably play at a high level for longer. I do agree that prime Shaq was unstoppable

Prime Shaq. I would take him over anybody, really, but it depends on what you want. If I am building a team, I start with the Center Position.

Lebron in today's NBA. Before zone defenses, definitely Shaq. Zone defenses really hurt today's back to the basket players. You can triple team guys in the post now, while pre-zone you had to play Shaq 1-on-1 or come with a quick double team before that guy had to hurry back to his man or get called for illegal defense.

No wrong answer but I'd probably take Shaq - to change my mind Lebron will have to remain unstoppable for a few more years

That'd be a fun exercise. Name the worst collection of 4 other starters that could still win a title with Prime Shaq.
