My friend backed into a gas pump pole this morning and it cracked his right taillight. Nothing else happened. The police and owner came and a report is filed and pictures were taken just because it was store policy. If the gas station found damage to the actual pump later on but not when the accident was there or the cop was there and they both signed the police report can they come back and try to blame you for the damage?

Yeah, he should have gotten in writing in police report that pump is ok

The police report should state what kind of damage was observed on the pump. If it states that there is no damage to the pump, then your "friend" is good to go. It would be hard to prove that your "friend" did that damage after the fact if the police report states that there was no damage to the pump that jumped out in front of your observant "friend".
I used to handle these types of situations all the time for State Farm. The police report carries tremendous weight.

if he hit the pole, why is the gas pump an issue?
I once hit a pole in the drive through at McDonalds. No cops came.

Why are police writing traffic reports on private property? IME, this is not the norm.
