What in god's name does an out of control killer's news cycle have to do with interviewing a Presidential candidate' former acquaintances?
Well, it had been routine for news outlets to explore a candidate's past to find out the "real people" that could vouch for the person a said candidate claimed to be. See: Romney being a bully in high school and mistreating the family dog.

Remember the Bush stories about draft dodging, cocaine use, DWIs, his wife getting away with vehicular homicide and being an an insider country clubber? Not to mention McCain's blowing up an aircraft carrier, submitting to Vietcong torturers and marrying up in class to own 8 houses?

It wasn't until Obama came along that asking questions about a guy who grew up outside the USA, attending elite schools, seeking out radicals and espousing flaws and fundamental transformations of our constitution became "extremism".

I think him being black is what won the first time. You can't tell me a white Barry would beat Hillary. That coupled with anti bush sentiment and a horrible McCain option

No... I see him in interviews and how how he carries himself. Always seems confident.

Think the difference between James Bond and Mitt Romney. They both wear suits and look dapper, but one is cool and one is not.

That is absolutely ridiculous. Obama won solely on the charisma he projected.

I don't see how you can deny that and attribute him winning the presidency to being black.

When has being a black politician ever made it easier to win the presidency? Give me a break.

re: When are the Republicans going to get a candidate with swagger / confidence?

Bigapple....I will go slowly with this...the MEDIA tends to protect those people with whom they agree. Obama, was a US Senator for 8 months before he ran for President. Outside of Chicago he was not known throughout the US. The MSM refused to educate us about the man and his past. Only 1 news channel told us about his association with a "domestic terrorist" or his dealings with an real estate agent who is in prison. Not one person in the media asked how a poor black child was able to go to the most prestigious private school in Hawaii. Not one person in the MSM researched his college history. This man was running for President....the leader of the free world....but the MSM refused to educate the public about his past or what he stands for........but let some deranged cop go bad and we know what he did in the 5th grade to some kid on the playground. The MEDIA reports what the want to report.....they have an agenda....either you believe that or you don't......and you have the nerve to call me the loon.

Ronald Reagan had that charisma. He knew what to say, looked confident saying it, and projected himself as the leader in charge.

And he was an old white guy. Not a person who would strike you as "cool" on first glance.

Who was the last black man to make a serious run at the presidency? Jesse Jackson? And even then everyone knew Jackson was a joke.

You are being dishonest if you say Obama being the first black president didn't have a big part in him winning.

Why do you think his numbers dropped off the last election? All the first time voters didn't care anymore. They got the first black president.

That with the other factors made it nearly inevitable. I do believe charisma plays a big part, but not as big as race in 2008.

I'm off to bed.

He was an actor. A terrific one at that.

His numbers dropped off because some of his polish wore off.

People saw what he did, and those who believed in him the first time didn't feel the same way the second time.

Plus, less people came out to vote overall. Even Republicans had a lower turnout than they did in 2008.

And even with such a dismal record in his 4 years in office, he still managed to win. Do you think a person like Jimmy Carter could have won with his record? Not a chance.

People want confident alpha male types in positions of power. It's human nature, and it's not limited to politics. Democrats were smarted enough to nominated two cool charismatic mofos in Clinton and Obama, not so much Kerry and Gore, and cocky SOB Bush beat their asses.

Yep. You don't have to look like Arnold to be the "alpha male" as far as being a leader goes.

It's all about the confidence you project that draws people.

Obama's almost seems somewhat like an act... like he's purposely worked on it when walking into a room and/or delivering a speech, his facial expressions, the way he turns his head with his chin high, etc. I don't think he was always like that or naturally like that like some people are.

I think he's specifically worked at it because he knows that it helps in politics.

Definitely. He had to learn how to work a room, give speeches, get money from donors. It does seem forced sometimes, but I think he's mostly bought into it by now.

True.

Screw the issues. Find a hip, personable candidate who connects to younger voters. Its all about the personality.

Let me ask you this Bigapple......24 hours after Chris Dorner was linked with the killings in LA, his former college football coach was interviewed by the national media. How many of Obama's former professors or classmates were interviewed DURING his campaign for President?

Good point. We still have not heard from that many people who ever knew the man when he was in his teens and 20's.

re: When are the Republicans going to get a candidate with swagger / confidence?

This topic is actually very relevant because Romney had every chance to win but failed to connect with people. For better or for worse, the "rather have a beer with" vote usually dictates the winner. The Dems did a great job with the Bain attacks and painting Romney has some corporate fatcat. Romney did little to counter that image. He gave people reasons to not vote for Obama, but he never energized people to vote for him. He was basically John Kerry 2.0.

The GOP has a terrible habit of nominating the guy who's waited his turn. Bush 1, Dole, McCain, Romney, etc. The GOP candidate seems to always be a lot more susceptible to being portrayed by the media as gaffe prone or out of touch. The GOP needs to nominate someone who can break that mold.
