Safety Play

Hey all, I am new to the forum and just wanted to get a little more insight and opinion on our safety "concerns"

I know Roman Harper is old, slow, and 1 dimensional and probably deserves much of his criticism, but is Jenkins really almost as bad at the other safety spot?

Jenkins is a freak of an athlete and the saints have not had anywhere close to a decent pass rush since Charles Grant and Will Smith in their prime (5+ years ago)And even they weren't that good.. And that obviously puts a lot of pressure on the whole secondary.

Don't hold back ;)

He's played the FS spot for a couple of years under two DC's...what do your eyes tell ya?

Mine see bad angles, slow reaction, poor tackling and a lack of turnovers. I think he needs to find a 3,4 or 5th CB role.

This is what I just dont understand. Think of the major difference we've seen in safety turnovers when transitioning from Darren Sharper to Jenkins. It's crazy. He simply doesn't put himself in a position to make turnovers. If he does he shows his stone hands. I'm a MJ supporter historically.

I was in the camp of people that thought he was going to be an all-pro type of safety. He has the makings.. Is it asinine to think that maybe he isn't being coached very well? I mean, both of our safeties have been pretty bad.. But it seems like the fundamentals (tackling, angles, etc) would be natural to a professional player..

For a moment there, I thought you were gonna suggest moving Jenkins to OLB.

Move Jenkins back to nickel where he played well when he came into the league. He'd also be a good backup in case of injury. The guy just isn't savvy or intuitive enough for safety. Something obviously doesn't click with him there.

Someone mentioned coaching.

That HAS to be part of it.

Payton obviously thought so.

re: Safety Play

The problem with rating safeties, and secondary players in general, is that unless you're an ultra-gifted standout, evaluation is difficult. Success at playing corner or safety is intertwined heavily on your teammates, the scheme called and the pass rush generated by the defensive line.

If any NFL quarterback routinely gets 7-10 seconds to throw the ball, receivers are going to get open- regardless if the corner is Revis or Patrick Robinson. So Jenkins may be a great athlete capable of performing well, but if his teammates aren't doing their job, it can make him look awful. (Note: I'm not saying Jenkins is great by any stretch, but he's better than his play this past season. I think in addition to his bad angles and poor tackling, the coaching staff put him in no-win lineup situations.)

re: Safety Play

Yeah, but 20 missed tackles in not even a full season is hard to blame on the rest of the team.

re: Safety Play

Lol no not OLB, but maybe with some good coaching, a more talented front 7/pass rush I think he may deserve some re-evaluation at FS instead of just using him as a nickel situation CB. If that is the case then it is definitely not worth holding on to Harper OR Jenkins in the long run

re: Safety Play

Yes that is what I was curious about, Client. I'm not trying to say he is or will be good/great at safety, but there are alot of factors involved and he IS a great athlete.

On the other hand, 20 missed tackles is hard to overlook like a few others have already mentioned in this thread and around the forum

re: Safety Play

My biggest issue with him being a safety is that he takes horrible angles. That's all on him, and it's not a desirable trait in a safety.

True, but it just doesn't seem consistent with what he's done in the rest of his career. I have to believe some of this comes from being put in the wrong place at the wrong time. Jeez. It sounds like I'm a total Jenkins apologist. I'm not. I just think he's better than what we saw last year. He's cheap for this next year and he's probably one of the most talented players we have in a horrendous secondary. I'm hoping next year's scheme suits him better.

Im not ready to quit on Jenkins yet, hopefully with this change of scheme we will see improvment but right now it seems he just dont have the insticts to play centerfield. Mabye the saints should hire Sharper as a Db coach.
