Sure, but popes usually take a new name, so no matter who becomes the next one, he could always just seize the name Pope Peter II and scare the crap out of people.

Vegas (Paddy Power) has already begun to release odds on the next pope...

15/8 Cardinal Arinze
9/4 Cardinal Turkson
5/1 Cardinal Ouellet
7/1 Archbishop Scola
1000/1 Bono

Watch for these two as heavy favorites for the papal crown.
Cardinal Angelo Scola
Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi

Both of them are excellent communicators and extremely bright. They bring a little bit of JPII charisma.

I foresee ... papal-themed FUBU apparel.

I'm all for a black pope from Ghana, but Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson really bungled that statement he released on the financial crisis if I remember correctly.

You seem awfully interested in this for a non believer. I'm not trying to start something, I'm just curious why that is.

I reentered the Church and have been going to mass since the summer of 2011. No serious girlfriends or any of that stuff since then. I still have some nasty habits and proclivities, but I'm a lot better than I used to be 2 years ago. It's still Carnival right now. Give me a little leniency until Lent hits again.

Why is this thread anchored?

It is extremely rare, but I think in today's age (media, rapid communication, etc.) he saw what PJPII slow demise did and he is trying to avoid it.

Remember, he was on his way to reading and praying in Germany before he was elected Pope. He had a front row seat to what JPII went through and likely is trying to avoid that spectacle where his "death pool" over shadows important papal work.

For those who are using this as an opportunity to slander the church or the Pope - i have some select words for you but out of christian charity will simply pray for you instead.

re: Pope Benedict set to Resign (also: Dear Forrest)

It makes sense. People whine about religious-themed topics so much that the easiest position for the admins to take is simply to enforce a "no religion for the sake of religion" stance that doesn't discriminate on the actual topic being discussed.

On the one hand, I would like to see it changed, and threads like this are a good reason why. On the other hand, the admins have found a stance that works and is easy to explain, so I can understand why they would want to keep it.

No worries.
