Cooking Channel chefs vs. Food Network chefs

Watching some Cooking Channel shows I recorded...and the quality of recipes and chefs on there seem way better than Food Network. No gimmicks, no fake/ seemingly fraudulent personalities, etc. I like watching Spice Goddess, Everyday Exotic, and Bitchin Kitchen.
I still enjoy Food Network, but a lot of the Food Network shows are more about the chef than the food. Look at Ree Drummond, for instance; she does her "I'm a simple country girl married to a rancher" shtick, and it turns out that her husband and his family are millionaires and own land in Oklahoma, and that she has maids. Not surprised. Then you have Paula Deen and her "yall yall yaaaallll" crap, Ina and her gay pals, and Giada and her boobs.

I think the content and shows on the cooking channel are quite a step up from what Food Network has become, but I still find it driven by entertainment much more than just food. I realize that the market for watching a serious chef in a professional kitchen creating some amazing stuff isn't as entertaining as watching personalities, but I could really do without all the fluff, and see more instruction on techniques and I suppose a bit more advanced content. PBS used to really have some of that, but either it comes on when I'm at work or they just don't focus on much of that anymore either.

Jacque Pepins shows are down to earth "how to's" in the kitchen.

PBS 3 has them all the time. It's Create Network Cox 123. They are running now a new Martha Stewart series, two Jacque Pepin's, two Julia Childs including her original, John Beshs, John Folse, Simply Ming, Cooks Country, Lidia Bastianich, New Scandinavian Cooking, Coastal Cooking, Rick Bayless and a few others. They rotate them in and out. Better than anything on Food Network by a mile.

Thanks for the heads up Martini. I will be checking that for sure.

Yeah, PBS shows some old school cooking shows. I like John Besh's show but his recipes are kind of out there; basically I would never make them because they take too much time & the ingredients he uses are sometimes not sold in grocery stores. Whenever I buy my own home I'll grow my own vegetable garden. Besh probably gets most of his produce from his garden and from the farmers in Lacombe and the northshore.

Wait, doesn't Food Network own the Cooking Channel?

Ya serious? That show is the epitome of a gimmick.

I think Besh's new show starts on PBS this Spring sometime. It's based on the Family Table cookbook.
