Check this crap out. This situation raises quite a few serious questions. How would you react, honestly...

Now, for me, I really don't know how I would act here. Obviously if I were a ways away from it, there really isn't anything I can do, especially with the large concentration of people.
On the other hand, if I were closeby and armed when this happened, I still don't know what I would do. That many people in close vicinity to this asshat would put them in jeopardy even if I were near the perp and had a clean shot. I guess the only thing I could really use if I were closeby is my pocket knife and that's about all I'm comfortable using in a large crowded area. But, then again, I honestly don't know how I would act if I had been there and I won't pretend I do. I just hope I would do the "right" thing, whatever it may be.

I already posed this question in another thread. The consensus was no you can't carry at parades, but you can carry walking around bourbon.

That's definitely a good start.
And KR, I understand the consensus in the last thread. Just using this as an example to show what can happen at events that are supposed to be fun because the dregs of society are always out there.

4 shots at pb range no one killed?

Only thing I think you can do is follow the perp and try to keep him in eye-shot so that the police, who would be around in a matter of seconds, would be able to track the guy.
I would not pull a cw in that situation. Too many people and too much chance that the PD think you're the perp.

Agreed. That's probably the best course of action.

I carry to protect me and mine, not to be a police officer, in that situation I would of first not been in N.O., second would of gotten away from the situation when words were being exchanged, thirdly gotten whoever was with me and get them to a protected area and gone on defense with my weapon when shots were fired. Way too many people around to try and be a hero.

In this situation I absolutely agree. The density of people makes it difficult to assure a good shot and a sure target.
But if I see a helpless person being beaten or held up, I would strongly consider intervening. I have a means to protect the person and feel it is my duty to do so. Obviously this is only for a person in my near vicinity and I would still need to use my best judgment. I wouldn't just draw immediately and run to the confrontation like a madman. I would be sure of everything first.

If I were carrying, was 100% sober, and had a clean shot at point blank range, I still would not shoot.
In a crowd like that, once the first shots are fired, the fight or flight response of everyone in the vicinity would kick in, and you would see a veritable stampede of people pushing and pulling against the crowd and not being able to go anywhere. In the split second you drew down on the assailant and lined up your sights, a freaked out tourist would likely bump your arm throwing your aim off (even at point blank range) and your shot may fly into an innocent bystander... That, or people in the crowd could believe that you were the assailant and disarm you/ beat you down.
As for the knife, the same situation goes... Too much risk for unintended casualties.
My personal solution is that I try to stay away from crowded areas. I don't know the mindset of others,so it stands to reason that the less crowded a place is, the less of a chance I have in running into someone bent on causing mayhem. I enjoy the city of New Orleans immensely, but I rarely, if ever, travel on Bourbon unless I'm going to meet friends at Lafitte's, or am going to a nearby restaurant.
ETA: having now gone back and watched the video, it seems like the skinny guy had started to push a path through the crowd for them to escape through before the shooting started. A whole lot of drunken, aloof faces in the crowd. Didn't seem like a whole lot of them were able to register what was going on at that moment. Having some drinks is a good time, but not having your wits about you in that situation is about as dumb as you can get.

Right. Cops wouldn't start shooting in that situation; neither would I.

Cops would use pepper spray. You don't need a ccp, you won't get hauled in for having it on your person, it won't ice innocent bystanders, and its great self protection if you have to be in that type of situation. Always try to stay out of arms reach from a potential adversary.
