IF he really doesn't care about the image it would give him/what others would think he should totally just do it quickly with as little fanfare as possible. I doubt he would be fined anywhere near that payout.
eta:although I'd assume the company would probably want to publicize the shite out of it which would lead to the organization and NFL threatening him pretty hard.
