I'm a little hesitant to shoot the Rangers out of the Kahr.

Kahr barrels are made by Walther and are +p rated. As long as I'm not giving it a steady diet of Gold Dots or PDX1s, it should hold up just fine.

it explicitly says Hydra Shocks are subpar.

This is what I have heard as well, but I dont have any real basis to prove it. My main reason for changing is because it's an older design and I believe ammo has evolved quite a bit in the last 10+ years.

The "new" Hydrashok design is the Federal HST. If you want a newer design, get the HST. I've seen ballistics tests of the Hydrashok and it seems to do the job pretty damn well. No complaints from me...

I believe there was just one case where a lawyer went after a loader in court, and all was determined was there was no ballistic data to compare. However, the defense was the components when put together equal a normal round loaded within proper specs.

Ill take my chances. Im not a criminal and I dont smoke crack or drive drunk, I do like me some fast women but,,,, any situation I am in that will need me to defend my life certainly will be forced upon me by some one else

After further reading in that link, I may have changed my mind.

quote:

First Class Pistols: They are considered very reliable and high-quality new firearms that can feed any hollow point along with tolerating +P factory loads with no problems.

quote:

SIG/Sauer P220 series. Czech CZ75 and CZ85. Walther P5, P5C, and P88. Heckler and Koch USP and P7 series. All Glocks. All Ruger 9mm pistols. Taurus PT-99, PT-92 and PT-92C. Steyr GB. Beretta 92 series. Browning BDM and Hi-Power (if it says "Portugal" on the slide). All Smith & Wessons with a four-digit model number (e.g. 5906, 3913, 6904, 5903) and the Smith & Wesson 900 series. Star M28, M30, M31, and all Firestars, Megastars, and Ultrastars.

And it looks like the info is a few years old. No mention of the Springfield XD line or even the S&W M&P's.

Anyone got their hands on some of the Underwood .40 S&W 135grain JHP? Been trying to score some for over a month to try it out.

It is definitely dated. The ammunition part has been updated some, but the gun information is several years old.

To be fair, though, the M&P and XD are still fairly young product lines.

Another thing is that ammunition technology is rapidly adapting, and the reference I cited would not be for those wanting recommendations on brand new, state of the art rounds. I don't care about that as much as I want tried-and-true, real world shooting data, which this reference tends to utilize. This is what I base my decision regarding what round to have in the chamber when it's "Go" time.

I know a guy who used handloads in self defense and put a thug in a wheelchair for life. There was not one mention of the type of ammo he used.

I would just be wary of handloaded defense ammo for reliability reasons. Then again, my backup hollow points are handloaded XTPs with Blue Dot. All my primary stuff is factory stuff though.

I carry the Hornady zombie bullets in my 9mm because when I bought them they were cheaper than the federal hydrashocks I carry in my .40.

Finally some Zombie 9mm defense rounds showed up at Academy today. I bought that and some PDX1's as well.

If you find Critical Defense in 9mm, buy that instead. It has nickel-plated cases that last longer without corroding. Use the Z-max rounds as backup.
