Atlanta Crawfish Boilers - when can I get some bugs?

Bump! 2014 post:

Me and my buddy are putting on a crawfish/low country boil combo for 30 people this Saturday. None of us are louisiana natives and as I said this is as much a low country boil as a crawfish boil, so what would be a good rule of thumb for purchasing?

Years previous we have gotten them at the Dekalb Farmer's Market but wanted to have some other places to compare against, and to have backup options in any case. Any recommendations for Atlanta area live crawfish spots? Preferably ITP or not far from it.

2013 post:
I've done crawfish boils the past two years but they've been well into the season, so I never had to question whether the Dekalb Farmer's Market would have them or not.

However, I'm trying to plan one for a month from now and I'm not sure when crawfish will be available here in Georgia (Metro Atlanta). Asked the guy in the seafood section last time I was there, but a language gap kind of prevented me from getting anything more definitive than "probably March".

So those who have done this for longer than I have, when/where can I get crawfish? If I'm doing a boil on Mar 3rd, where can I count on picking some up?

Only doing like 20 people's worth.

There's a restaurant in Acworth that crawfish is their speciality. Can't remember the name, but I'm sure he could put you on some fresh bugs.

Inland Seafood - have bought from them in the past (in Tucker I believe)
Crawfish Shack - pretty sure you can buy live to take home (off buford hwy)

Called Inland and they wouldn't even talk to me because I wasn't a grocer/restaurant . Am I doing it wrong?

That actually makes sense... every time I have bought from them they asked me "my company" and I responded with my dad's company which technically has a restaurant license... I was always able to use my credit card tho and never had to show like a business card or anything.

Crawfish shack may be a better option. Have you tried buford hwy farmers market?

Buford hwy said they don't have them.

What's the word down in Louisiana guys? I feel like i'm at risk of them not being shipped up this way to the spots I've called til next weekend. What's the season been like down there?

Swoop,

I talked to Chad at Cajun Meat Company in Marietta last weekend, as well as, the owner of Catering Cajun in East Cobb and both said don't expect live crawfish for a decent price for 2-3 more weeks. Cold weather and farmers have kept the price outrageous. That being said, you can call either place on a Monday or Tuesday and they can have you as much as you want by end of the week.

Also, Chad at Cajun Meat Company on Roswell Rd. usually has a limited boiled amount on Saturdays. But no matter what you usually have to call him early in the week before he goes down and picks up his orders from LA.

Appreciate the help. Getting nervous and looking seriously at mail-ordering some from lacrawfish.com . Anyone recommend against that? Coming out around $5/pound and looking to get 20 lbs.

Here's what I'm planning for a low-country boil/crawfish boil shindig this Saturday for ~30 people:

Red potatoes 12.00 Pounds
Corn 24.00 Ears
Shrimp 11.00 Pounds
Sausage 7.00 Pounds

And 20 lbs crawfish. That seem reasonable to everyone?

Yeah, but let me qualify it by pointing out how much shrimp etc we have. More of a low country boil with crawfish thrown on top. Does that make any more sense?

It isn't a true Louisiana crawfish boil

Just checking them out and it appears LAcrawfish.com is cheaper.

It makes sense. Just not practical, but if money isn't a real concern then go for it.
You're going to pay about $7/lb or ~$140 for shipping and crawfish that could feed about 5 people.
