9 year olds first time shooting after many seasons of being jerk string boy. Arkansas youth weekend. After many misses a big green head swings in and on his third shot duck drops like a ton of bricks. After screaming, hugging, and high fiving I realize duck is hobbling off. I literally ran in waders through field. After exhaustive 30 minute search no luck. Get back to blind and he has tears streaming down his face. He was really disappointed. What a great memory for a dad though.

That's hunting. Good lesson there.

It'll make him appreciate the next one that much more.

Can't wait til mine can get out there

Wait till hes older and tells the story of the duck that outran his old man. It will get a little funnier every time he tells it.

That's funny. I was dying. Thought I was in pretty good shape until yesterday.

I'm sure he would rather deprive his son of the experience/opportunity of holding his 1st kill rather than waste another shell

I have to think that the obvious answer is that during their excitement and celebration at seeing the duck splash down, they failed to realize that it was a swimmer when it hit the water. Lesson learned for the little man and it will make him a better "collector" in the future.

I know how he feels. My first almost deer I was hunting with my dad in a box stand and a doe walked out. I was shooting my dads .270. She dropped, but got up and started running. After a 3 hr search couldn't find any more blood. I was broken hearted, but explain to him it won't be the first time it happens, and that's what hunting is all about

My sons first pintail did the same thing except I found it. Paddled after it and shot 3 shots on the water. It went on land and I looked forever just when I was giving up I lifted the pirogue and he was under it.....we celebrated like it was a world record deer

Y'all need a dog....

I have everything a good duck hunter needs except ducks, lol

Getting on a waiting list for a club in a lake by the house. Hopefully next season won't be miserable as the last two.
