| International Travel Questions (Posted on 2/2/13 at 7:07 pm)
I will be going to Malaysia in April and it will be my first time visiting this part of the world. Any suggestions on sights to see or basic protocols for traveling to Asia. I will be staying for a month. Thanks for any help.

Was there a few years back. KL is awesome, Bangkok is alright but pretty crowded and dirty. Jump around and see a lot, AirAsia has cheap flights in the region. I spend some time on Borneo which a great just to hike through the rainforest. I wanna go back because I never hit Singapore. Also, don't think about bringing any drugs, could get you the death penalty.

Buy a travel guide from Fromers. They will have a bunch in there about customs and expected behavior as well as the usual what to see and do.

I've heard about the drugs and the hookers, both of which I will stay away from, but how bad is pick pocketing?

Pick pocketing isn't bad. I didn't wear a wallet in my back pocket because that would be asking for it. They sell these money holders that go around your neck like a sling and you can carry money in the front. I kept daily cash in front pockets and the rest in the holder under my shirt. If you go to Bangkok you will have to deal with relentless people trying to sell you stuff that won't take "no" for an answer. It's every corner and you have to just get far enough away from their trinket stand before they go back. That really made me dislike the city. Another key thing is to know a fair taxi fare before you arrive. They will try to rip you off if you look like a tourist (ie not Asian). You may end up having to talk to 10 taxis before one offers you a fair deal.

Although it is too late for you, but anyone traveling abroad needs to invest the $100 and the time and get a Global Entry card from TSA. It is worth cutting the 45 minutes of BS every time you return to the USA.

I spent about 3 weeks there last March. The best thing to do in Malaysia is eat. Kuala Lumpur is a cool city, really not too much to do there. But spent a few days just walking around. Check out the Towers and the Batu Caves are worth a stop by. Wiki travel has a cool walking route to do one afternoon to really see the whole city. Check out Georgetown, Penang for a cool little town and the best food spot in Malaysia. Perhentian Islands for some beautiful beaches. The Cameron Highlands are nice and beautiful and if you have the time worth the stop by, but can be skipped. Head down to Taman Negara and spend a few days hiking in the jungle. Very cool experience. I stopped in Melaka for 2 days on my way down to Singapore, but really nothing to do there unless you make it on a friday night. As far as accomodation, not sure your travel style, but I was super budget and made it on just over $30 a day staying in guesthouses. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions or want and food recs. Eating was basically all I did there. Those muslim women sure know how to cook.
