Sounds like he believes any civilization that can make it "un-nuked" through it's infancy that the end game is eventually becoming The Borg.

So he is saying that the machines take over in 2040. Great. Hope I am around to see that. I'll be in my 70's. Should start seeing a terminator soon. Gotta find John Connor before it is too late.

Basically, yes. But the Borg was still merely a Type II Civilization.

Its possible, but I'd say its unlikely. More likely we will evolve as a species into homosuperior. As he puts it, it will want to spread itself into the very fabric of the world and the universe itself, and thus we'll become infinitely more intelligent by doing that. Plus he's not saying that machines are going to kill us, just fricking over our own resources or nuking each other into an oblivion would do it.

It would shock me if they didn't try it again though.

A more optimistic hypothesis is that there's some discovery we're unable to comprehend that takes civilizations in an entirely different direction, one that we're not able to identify from our astronomical observations.

Is there an example of a type 3 civilization in Sci-Fi? The Ancients from Stargate maybe or The Q?

The video talks about, in layman's terms, turning the galaxy, then the universe, into a massive computer. Since anything outside the immediate vicinity can't communicate in real time, this wouldn't accomplish anything-unless we mastered faster than light communication. And if we can overcome the laws of physics, we're not constrained by anything so trivial as limits on the size of integrated circuits. Maybe we don't see evidence of other civilizations because they've figured out interdimensional travel or some such.

Wouldn't the Empire be considered type IIi. I believe I've heard Michio state this. Kurzweil also claims that we will not be able to tell the difference between computer and human: "The machines will convince us that they are human, they'll embody human form, claim to be human, and we'll believe them" My belief is as long as the transition isn't forced on civilization, the jump from 0 to 1 can be achieved without us wiping out humanity

Very possible, a type III or greater will have mastered this. I've heard Michio state, "to a type 2-3 civilization we are ants. Have you ever stopped traveling down the highway when you see an ant pile and say hello."

After reading the Singularity i'm uncertain if we would even be able recognize a type 3 civilization. The singularity suggests that the computers will move endlessly throughout the universe devouring planets, stars, black holes, ect; until the universe is one single intelligence. Imagine having 1 hyper-intelligent computer with the sole intention of self replication and improvement. Now grow that concept exponentially and boom........ SINGULARITY = trillions of self replicating super computers that seek to improve on their already impressive computational genius.
