I never would've thunk it. Brady won 60% of his games and Dale won 59.8%

Dale Brown brought in lot's of talent, but they didn't have character for the most part. So it was difficult to coach them into a cohesive team. To make matters worse, Brown was not strong on discipline. Oh, well...

His reputation was based on taking three teams, that had underperformed during the season, deep into the NCAAs. And of course, the '79 team.

Dale Brown really exemplified the problem of staying too long in a job. He could have retired a few years earlier as a legend and hero (and with a much higher winning percentage). Instead, he tried to hang on too long, drove the program into the ground and, in desperation, got us on probation. On the whole, I still have a positive view of coach Brown because I took the position that, since he had built the program, it was his to destroy if he wanted to, and he had given us a really good 15-year run to enjoy. The only thing that really ticked me off about it was the probation. He inherited a clean program that was a loser, and he left a dirty one that was a loser. Had he left it as a clean loser, the way he found it, I would have been OK with him. Ideally, he should have left it clean and a winner, but his mission was really always about him and the players anyway, not the program.

Didn't have character? I didn't think that was a problem with Coach Brown's players. Granted, some of them didn't live up to their hype, didn't keep up their grades, etc., but I don't think they lacked character. If anything, the opposite is true. Building players' character was a strong point of his, IMO.

1989-1990

A team with:

Shaq
Stanley Roberts
Vernel Singleton
Chris Jackson

Dale manages to make to the NCAA 2nd Round.

How wonderful that was.

I'd be curious to see their SEC winning percentage. As I recall, Brady's pre-conference schedule was usually pretty watered down.

Pssssst.... don't let the secret out but most, if not all national programs are dirty, to an extent.
