| Training cats--Kitty door (Posted on 1/29/13 at 4:03 pm)
So I installed this kitty door in the window because my wife didn't want to frick up a really expensive door. How do I train these bastards to use it? They just won't go through on their own. I've shoved them through about 20 times already and they refuse to use it.

eta: we could never get our dog to go through the dog door. She would follow other dogs through it but wouldn't use it by herself.

If they are inside, put their food outside of the cat door. They'll use it if they know what's good for em.

It's a cat. It won't use that shite unless it's his own idea. The fact you are trying to force him to do it means he probably won't use it out of spite.

Its a cat! Same animal that would just watch you be brutally murdered and just lick itself. Anywho, just keep them outside and I'm sure that they will eventually understand that's the only way to get inside.

Throw them through it a few times. They will learn.

We have one for the storage area under our stairs. Keep her food and litter box in it. Our cat is a little throwed off and would not go through it. We had to remove the door on it to just have a hole in the door. Won't work for you though with yours leading outside.

:inb4killit: Prop it open. They'll learn after a while.

This is probably true. But go ahead and prop the door open, as another poster said & use a bowl of food for positive reinforcement. They'll start using it ... when they're good & ready.

Probably because it looks like every other piece of glass they can't walk through.

Success. I used catnip to get them through it for the last week. That shite is apparently like crack. Now they are using it by themselves and I don't have to get up at 3am to let these frickers out.
