Why is it the "Houston Texans"? They supposed to represent the whole state?

Why Do the Angels use Anaheim and Los Angeles?
Where is the state of Carolina for the Panthers?
Why do they still use the team name "Lakers" in a near desert city of Los Angeles?

Tampa the city is about 10% of the Tampa Bay metropolitan area's total population. It's a Bay Area. Hell Tampa/St. Petersburg/Clearwater combined are only like 20% of the metro area.
I mean it's pretty simple. Market to 350k or market to 4m+.

It's interesting that Tampa Bay and Minnesota don't use a city name for all their teams.
Teams not using city (metro area) for name...
NFL:
Tampa Bay (Tampa/St.Petersburg)
New England (Boston)
Arizona (Phoenix)
Carolina (Charlotte)
Minnesota (Minneapolis/St. Paul)
Tennessee (Nashville)
NBA:
Minnesota (Minneapolis/St. Paul)
Utah (Salt Lake City)
Golden State (Oakland/San Francisco)
MLB:
Tampa Bay (Tampa/St.Petersburg)
Minnesota (Minneapolis/St. Paul)
Texas (Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington)
Arizona (Phoenix)
Colorado (Denver)

why don't Green Bay drop the bay and just go with Green?

True Story -- When Tampa Bay first joined the NFL, they were in the same division as Green Bay. When Tampa Bay went and played in Green Bay, Green Bay just put "Tampa" on the scoreboard. The people in Tampa Bay were pissed about it since their official name was "Tampa Bay".
So, when Green Bay took the return trip to Tampa Bay later in the season, Tampa merely put "Green" instead of "Green Bay" on the scoreboard.

I think the guy's point is that you're still singling out one city whether you call them "Tampa Bay" or "Tampa."
Maybe they should just call themselves West Florida or something.

It's the Tampa Bay metro.
St. Pete is also larger but no one knows that.

Floridians are geographically challenged. USF is in Tampa, for crying out loud.

Nah Tampa's the flagship. More people and larger area.

Every team in Texas tries to market itself as the team that is the "most Texas." They have a baseball team named after their cops, for Christ's sake. But yeah, virtually every team has a "lone star" in their logo, almost the same way that every team in Louisiana is beginning to adopt a fleur-de-lis.
