I've been a beer drinker all my life and love the stuff. Due to recent surgery and advancing age, I've decided to start learning to appreciate the taste of bourbon. After much perusing of this site and others to find out what to try, I picked up a bottle of Buffalo Trace and started having a tot in the evening before dinner. I must say that the taste is quite a bit smoother than I remembered bourbon being in the past. I pour it over ice and sip it slowly as the ice melts adding nothing else. I am surprised to find that I am taking to the stuff as fast as I am.
Any more bourbon brand recommendations from the more sophisticated palates on this board will be welcomed.

It is hard to beat a good bourbon. I drink much more bourbon than beer now due to low carb diet.

I guess my tastes have changed. I never did try to drink bourbon very much until now. I think the reason that I didn't like it earlier was that I was not drinking very good bourbon. Now that I've found some smooth quality sipping bourbon there is a difference. Buffalo Trace is quite tasty, and I would like to expand my bourbon drinking horizons even more with other quality libations.

Buffalo Trace is great for a $20 Bourbon. You will be pleasantly surprised when you spend another 15-20

What kind of surgery or illness prevents you from drinking beer, but allows sipping whiskey?

Pour it straight into a glass. By trial and error add just enough water until it tastes the way you want it. Drink it neat.

I had lap band surgery for weight loss. My doctor recommended the surgery for me to help get my weight under control and to get me off insulin. I've lost 90# and have been off of insulin for 8 months now. I feel better than I have in a long time.
The thing about the weight loss surgery is that I can't drink carbonated drinks now. They fill me up after a few ounces. I can't drink beer, sodas, or any kind of carbonated mineral water without filling up after a few sips.
I still love the taste of beer and would continue drinking it if I could. However, I've decide to take a 2 oz shot of bourbon before dinner to get used to it. Since I am bourbon ignorant, I decide to ask the fine spirits drinkers here for their input on the subject.
By the way, I'm 57 years old and don't drink much now anyway. I had a good run eating and drinking as much and whatever I wanted and it is past time to tone it down and take a little better care of myself. Hell, I'm even exercising now!
