If I may jump into ST, why is this change being made now? Is this a white flag before the season in order to lay the groundwork for the future?

Your DL isn't good enough to do its 3-4 purpose and eat up OL.

Your LBs, assuming they can get freed up, are average at best, and now you're putting even more pressure on them to make plays and be the sure tacklers.

Your OLBs aren't good pash rush generators.

Your players all have 4-3 experience. This is clearly a newly initiated direction. You sure haven't been building for this.

Sounds like you're overhauling the entire defensive roster (which you probably should) at once and growing with it. I also assume Payton just assumes the defense can't possibly get any worse so might as well start over.

Holy shite, I feel so affirmed with my "Should we switch to the 34" threads.

I think we def have the personnel for it, it was really just the scheme that wouldn't allow for it.

I don't think you wave a white flag with a top 3 to 4 qb. I think it's a lot easier to find pieces for a 3-4 these days than elite 4-3 pieces. Cam Jordan, should excel, as should Lofton. Martez and junior are significantly more geared to play OLB than with their hands in the dirt. They don't need to be SF good just top 18-20.

Well our line was getting no pressure to begin with..

We do have some talented tweener DE/LBs in Galette and Tez Wilson that haven't been able to see playing time. They'll see the field now.

Smith, Bunkley/Hicks and Jordan can eat up lineman..

This will work better than what we had

Well, if you take trash from a system they're familiar with, and put them into a completely foreign one that really no one has experience in, that doesn't inherently mean the product will be any better.

We may not have the pieces to make a good 3-4 right now, but we also didn't have the pieces to make a good 4-3. The players we have that are good in the front 7 (Jordan and Lofton) can transfer over to the 3-4 fairly well. Jordan does have 3-4 experience and is actually a better fit for that scheme. We also have 2 de's who are too small for the 4-3 but may fit the 3-4 as olb's.

It's also just a radical change in an area that needed some kind of radical change. At the least the defense couldn't get any worse. I didn't think this would happen, and I actually argued against ithe 3-4 when it was brought up in the past. I think it's safe to assume that Payton knows more than me though.

I think the firing was a little short sighted. The personnel plain isn't very good. Spags shares some blame but unless there is some infusion of talent, the D is going to suck next year.

It wasn't all about performance, Spags clearly didn't see eye to eye with the other coaches, players, GM..

Sorry Spags, you came at a bad time. Then, you coached the worst defense in history. Best of luck in the CFL.

I don't think this is as big of a deal as people are making it (the switching to a 2-4). Under Gregg Williams, we mixed the 3-4 plenty with the 4-3. Go back and watch some 2010 defensive highlights, we played a decent amount of 3-4, specifically the Buffalo game.

Whoever they get just has to put together a serviceable unit and it'll be judged a success. If the Saints have a top 15 D, you might just say Superbowl. Top 25 gets you the playoffs with that offense.
