As for what stopped the German's at Moscow's suburbs, there were three important factors.

The decision to divert forces to encircle the Red Army at Kiev was certainly a major factor as well.

Ok so why did we go to Europe then? Why, if they were doing so great by themselves, did we send our boys over there?

re: Greatest Military Leaders Ever?

Totally agree, but as the war went on training/tactics did a lot more than you think...

I'm not saying otherwise. I'm just saying that Germany sans Hitler who was a military dunce, also had some very good tacticians who were more than a match for anyone we brought to the table.

It was a simply a matter of we put so many guns, tanks, ships, planes, and bombs into the war theater that Germany simply couldn't compete.

Contrast that to today.

Our men have far superior training and tactics to the Taliban. And yet, 10 years later we haven't even subdued them in one country.

Because we haven't overwhelmed them with sheer numbers the way we did in WWII.

The Lend-Lease program is a very small cog in the wheel and doesn't carry anywhere near the amount of significance required to support your assertion.

Actually do not sell the Lend-Lease program short. Virtually all of the trucks used by the soviets were American. Virtually all the boots worn by their men were also American made. And also their med were fed almost exclusively with American rations, particularly Spam. so yes, the soviets were able to field a massive army. But were it not for American aid that army would have been barefoot, starving, and also walking as well.

Politics quite frankly. Did not want all of Europe to be communist.

We were scared shitless of Stalin, his power, and his political ideals were the main reasons. That and Churchill got on his knees and blew FDR in his wheelchair.

Oh and Japan bombed pearl harbor and were in alliance with some bad frickers in Europe.

I suppose you're not aware of the fact that Hitler actually declared war on us and it wasn't the other way around?

True, but that actually had more to do with the timing of the arrival in front of Moscow.

Had we not supplied more men to the allies, Stalin would have mopped up what Hitler had conquered and taken Europe for himself

Whoa, not so fast - at the time of the war, we were allies w/ them and gave them as much material as we did others. Would they have beaten Germany in a one on one war? Will never know, but I say it's unlikely...

I give him credit for bucking Stalin but I believed they did kill him off. Not sure.

Stalin saw him as a potential rival and demoted him after WWII. Secret Police chief Beria tried to discredit him during this time, but Zhukov had his own allies and survived. After Stalin's death, he returned to favor and became Defense Minister. He lived until 1974.

No fricking way.

If they didn't piss off Stalin and advance in the East through Poland, the US wouldve been embarrassed by the Nazis.

Stalin and US had a VERY light alliance. We were both scared of each other and knew we didn't want the other becoming some world dominating power post-war.

Which has to do with the weather situation faced by the advancing German army which in turn allows Stalin to turn Moscow into a fortress city. It also buys time for the eventual arrival of the Siberian forces which allowed the Soviets to counterattack. I'd say it had to do with more than just when the Germans showed up on the doorstep.

I realize that, but you think Hitler was in any shape to attack us? He had two massive wars raging on both sides of him you think he had the men to send over here? Doubt it seriously. And I do realize that we didn't trust Stalin was another reason we went over there. But the reason we went was because they really and truly needed us. Not as much the Soviets but especially the British.

Once again I'm not diminishing the fact that they did their parts but they (especially the British) might not could've done it without us.

re: Greatest Military Leaders Ever?

Meh. I guess it depends on how you look at things. That's more so a list of some of most notorious military leaders. I would think that strategic acumen and accomplishing great military feats would make a truly great general.

Stonewall Jackson and Robert Lee belong on the list in my opinion. Julius Caesar does not. He may have been brilliant, but in terms of demanding situations in waging war his greatest accomplishments included beating up on inferior opposition in Gaul. He also appointed himself dictator for life of Rome, but that seems like more of a political accomplishment to me. I don't know much about Joan of Arc as a military leader, but I suspect that she is only on this list because she is a notable female figure in military history.
