Goodell deserves respect from Saints fans

quote:

It’s a well-known fact that Saints fans are more than a little upset with Goodell over the bounty scandal. Personally, I think a lot of fans are overlooking the fact that their team did something very wrong in running a three-year bounty program and Goodell was simply doing his job and protecting the NFL by handing out harsh punishments. But I don’t think Saints fans suddenly will see it that way, even after player suspensions were vacated in the appeals process.

quote:

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Saints came very close to leaving New Orleans. Team owner Tom Benson wanted to move his team to San Antonio. But former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue was intent on blocking any move to keep the Saints in New Orleans for the long haul.

Who did Tagliabue put in charge of making sure the Saints didn’t leave town?

Goodell, who then was one of Tagliabue's top assistants.

The Superdome was a mess after the storm. Local officials thought it would take until 2007 to get the facility back into shape. The NFL feared that if the Saints had to spend another season in San Antonio, they’d be gone for good.

Goodell got the message across to local officials that the Superdome needed to be ready for the 2006 season. Goodell then worked hard to make sure that happened.

Despite whatever good he may have done after Katrina, dude basically screwed the fans and city out of a year of competitive football. I personally hopes Goodells limo takes a wrong turn right into the 9th ward.

Not a good point. We were used as an example, the investigation was based off of hearsay. You could probably have found evidence of the same sort of system at half of the leagues teams prior to this season, we were just the unlucky ones who were made into an example and fricked over.

I hope that documents showing just how much of a kangaroo court this was--e.g., the transcripts that De Smith referred to and/or Benson's Freeh Report--surface sometime AFTER the SB but before the draft so that all of the focus can be on how Goodell fricked up.

It would be great if those two got leaked...

I love how we never heard any of this stuff until now. All you originally heard was how it was Tagliabu who got NO back up and running.

NFL bullshite machine back up and running. They are full of shite and I hope something does happen to his arse.

tagliabue was the one that called for it. he appointed someone, which just so happened to be frickdell.

doesn't mean that frickdell gave a rat's arse, he was just doing his job that tagliabue told him to do.

if biden did some awesome thing that obama told him to do, biden wouldn't get credit for it. it was "obama's administration" that would get credit. so I give tagliabue's administration credit for it, not goodell.

Anyone still regurgitating this tired arse propaganda line after all that's come out can only possibly be trolling. This invalidates any potentially valid opinions he may or may not have in the rest of the article.

In short--frick Yasinkas Goebbels.

I actually used to like Yasinkas. I thought he was fair, balanced, and unbiased (for the most part) among all 4 NFCS teams, but ever since "Bountygate", the answer is definitely

trolling

He hit rock bottom as a journalist when he said Payton's "second rebuilding project" (referring to this year coming up), would be more difficult than his first.

He's not a troll but he is a damned idiot.

This passage from the NYT article was rich
quote:

Goodell does have plenty of defenders, and his history with New Orleans has several high points. As a top assistant to the former commissioner Paul Tagliabue, he was largely responsible for keeping the Super Bowl in New Orleans after the 2001 season, when the game was pushed back after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. If not for Goodell, league officials say, the game might have been moved to a different city because a convention of automobile dealers had booked the Superdome on the game’s new date; after intense negotiations led by Goodell, the automobile dealers agreed to swap dates with the league.

These motherfrickers are really trying to act like without Goddell there's no way the Dome could've told a car convention to hit the bricks so they could host a fricking Superbowl?

I think the length and extent of Payton's extension was excessive . . . BUT, we tend to forget that he and others lied to Goodell's face. And deceived the league more than once (it is utterly irrelevant whether the players intentionally tried to injure . . . the fact is that the staff lied to the league about pay for performance). If not for that, I doubt his suspension would have been as severe.

It is also true that the NFL took steps to keep the team in N.O.

Point being that Yasinskas is not totally offbase. I know I'll catch shite because I'm not toeing the party line.

There's merit to what you say. The question is, was what Payton and the Saints did bad enough to merit the suspensions and punishment that they received? If it was and the NFL had the evidence to prove it, why didn't they? All they presented was slipshod hearsay that was destroyed each time it was presented. Bottom line, what happened was a preemptive action in the wake of the looming concussion lawsuits. Ultimately, Goodell butchered things so badly, that his former boss had to step in...and ultimately criticized how he (Goodell) handled it.

There's absolutely no doubt that were it not for Tagliabue's intervention, the Lombardi trophy would be in San Antonio and not New Orleans. Goodell acted under orders from Tagliabue. Point being that I find it more than a little interesting that multiple news sources, many of which previously credited Tagliabue for keeping the Saints in New Orleans are now changing their story...and all are basically saying the exact same things at the same time, almost as if they were prompted.

Maybe soon, ESPN will credit Goodell with making their Loomis wiretapping story go away.
