| Any advice on a credit card for a college student? (Posted on 1/21/13 at 7:49 pm)
I am a junior in college and am looking to start building some credit with a credit card. I won't be using it for anything outrageous. Just to pay a few bills that I am financially capable of paying as is.
I am new to all of this, so if anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated.

just get one with no fees to start building credit. Pay it off every month. It can be a slippery slope if you don't.

Many universities have their own rewards cards with kickers at the book store, library, ect. Probably some other features aimed at young, poor, dumb, horny college kids. Check it out.

The chase amazon one is also great if you buy stuff from
Amazon a lot.
A point for every dollar charged, and 3 for amazon purchases.

I'd go with an Amex Charge Card... That way you have no choice but to pay it off each month

You're probably not getting approved for an AMEX card right off the bat.
I started with the Discover student card in college, similar to other cards with a 5% rotating category and 1% flat cashback rate. I got turned down for the AMEX Blue Cash card at first, but then I got my Discover limit increased a fair bit and I got the AMEX Blue Cash with the same limit a few months later. I use them according to bonus categories (e.g. 3% back on groceries on the AMEX), basically buying like I did with my debit card but the rewards are far superior, fraud won't hit my checking account and I have the option to carry a balance in an emergency situation.

I guess I am lucky because my parents had a gas card in my name since I turned 16.... My sister, brother, and I were all approved with Amex as our 1st card

Does anyone know if corporate cards help your credit? It's in my name and I pay it. But once I'm done with my internship I have to cut it up. But will I be able to easily get another credit card? I have been turned down a few times haha.

If it shows up on your credit report, yes it will impact your credit.

Not if you don't keep paying the bill on time.  If you do, then it depends but it shouldn't hurt.

If you have any student loans with Sallie Mae i would suggest a UPromise Card (through Sallie Mae) No fee, and if you shop online alot, there are a lot of 10% back companies to use the card at. All cash back goes to paying down you student loans.

Capital One Bank has a starter card for students. I think they start with a $300 or so limit. Great for starting out and you can't really get yourself in trouble with that limit.
