I bought my Model 70 last year and love it. My father in law bought his 30-06 last year also. He is wanting to trade me guns because he now has multiple 30-06 rifles, and doesn't own a .270. The only reason I am contemplating it, is for the versatility of the 30-06. But honestly, I don't really hunt anything other than whitetail...so do I really want/ need the 30-06? What's the OB's opinion?

No no no no no no no in the m77. Just, no. You have a superior rifle in the 70 as long as it's the controlled round feed.

And I am biased towards the 270, but the 30-06 is a fine round.

I heard the same thing. Have personal experience with two new ones that still exhibit HORRIBLE accuracy and weigh a ton yet still defy physics in succeeding to have the recoil of an H&H single shot chambered in 300RUM. Literally have never fired one that I'd give you a single dead president for.

Good rule of thumb for me is to never get rid of a model 70 or pass up a good deal on one.

I like an 06 much better than a 270 but think the model 70 is a nicer rifle. Tough choice.

I shoot the Winchester Model 70 .270. That is a fine, flat shooting rifle. A true classic. I wouldn't part with it.

Stick with the model 70 in .270.

I've had a M77 in .308 for 12 years and it has been an outstanding gun. Never had an issue out of it.

M77's (especially the old ones) have gotten lots of bad publicity for shitty triggers and poor accuracy.

I've personally never seen one shoot all that bad. Evidently they're out there though. I haven't shot many of them.

i've killed 11 bucks and an uncountable number of hogs with it and have never had a problem with accuracy or anything else. at 200 yds it consistently hits sub 1". i'm really suprised about this info because it has been nothing but an outstanding gun for me and is the firearm that turned me into a ruger fan (i'm getting a gunsight scout next week).

You got lucky regardless of if they make shitty ones or not. People spend lots of money on rifles to get them to shoot close to that good.

Like I said, I've never shot one that shot what I would call bad. They were all 1.5-2 MOA rifles which is perfectly acceptable for a hunting rifle IMO. I'm sure they could have all been made to shoot better just by swapping ammo.

I personally am a huge ruger fan. It's not hard to find stuff on the internets about the issues people have had with them though.

It'll probably be my next rifle regardless of the issues people have had. I have a hard time believing ruger would not correct the issues if I had any. Ruger casts the mounts into their receivers and supplys rings with their rifles. That's reason enough for me to buy one. I'm also a huge fan of mauser actions and ruger's tendency to "overbuild" things.
