I would have thought after that Seattle game, the Saints would have quickly resigned Sharper last year considering his safety IQ is much better than that of Harper.

Persnnel issues......we changed coaches and had the same results, now look at when we had guys like Sharper on defense......offense excelled and defense got turnovers.

Harper gets shite on more than he really should. is he elite? hell no - but we have had some far worse players to play the position than him.

and why bring up the Seattle game? how about the games he played decently this year?

make no mistake im not saying our D wasn;t bad - cause it was - but 1 player doesn't make the entire D bad.

welcome to ST

seeing that no team signed Sharper tells you where his physical ability was at. When you are done in the NFL you are done.

they play different positions that require different skill sets.

I'll go out on a limb and say the majority here understand Harper's weaknesses in coverage but count him as an above average strong safety overall. When utilized effectively in the box he performs far above average. I have no problem with him as a part of the defense regarding performance. I am extremely bothered by his contract though. The most successful teams are those that score plenty of players who outperform their contracts. You also must avoid bad contracts. Harper costing $15mil of cap the next two seasons is too expensive for what he brings IMO. Prediction: renegotiated deal

Which game?

And you'd be surprised at the difference in one player on defense can make.....shall we compare Sharper at safety vs Harper?

That's where I'm at. Very bad contract.

His performance was good overall. He actually seem to improve in coverage this year, but we've gotta figure out something with his contract.

bLUE.. SS more of a run supporter........FS more of a pass supporter. Sharper played both, which is why his IQ is higher, and do you honestly think if the Saints got rid of Harper teams will be breaking their necks to sign him. The only highlight they will probably show is him getting sucked up by Sam Bradford and nearly passing out.

Again two defensive coordinators coached top 10 defense sin the nfl, yet when they coach the Saints defense, their defense ranks near the bottom, the common denominator is the players. I would have rather seen Harper take Shanle's place at lb, that way he's not exposed to too many passes, and at least we won't have to worry about him covering wr's and te's.

You do know LB's cover tight ends and sometimes wide receivers correct?

Breaking their necks? No, but he would be pretty highly sought after. He's an above average SS.

He would find a new job pretty quick. Just not at $15mil for 2yrs. I think it was a poor UFA year and poor draft outlook that forced Loomis to re-sign him to the high side. The backload on the last two years leads me to believe they knew they would deal with this question after the 2012 season.

I would be fine with cutting him for cap management. I just think it much more likely they re-do his deal. It would cost almost $4mil of cap and real money to cut him BTW.

THIS. You'd be amazed what a pass rush can do to help your secondary in coverage. I would say that the Saints priority on defense is getting the personnel who can generate a pass rush without blitzing. If you can get pressure on the QB with the front four only, you have something special going on on defense.

With that said, the Saints need a defensive tackle(s) that can occupy blockers, not just a space at the lunch table. If you have that, then the defensive ends should win one on one battles while the interior of the offensive line gets pushed back into the quarterback's face.

Haper is NOT the problem. The front 4 are lacking...

LB's have to cover WR's and TE's a good bit.

But like others have said, I'd like to see him have his contract reworked at the least, he is over payed IMO.

which Game?

how about this - instead of bitching about 1 game 2 years ago, try and look objectivly and Harpers play the last 2 years versus others on the defense. you will find that harper has actually been one of the brighter spots.

and quit comparing him to Sharper - you can't, Sharper is in a class of his own....not may players can be that calibre of player.
