I shot a 10 point (about 185 lbs) on Sunday with my .30-.30 - first deer with this gun. I have been shooting the 160 grain Hornady Leverevolution bullets. I made a soild shot into the front sholder of the deer (knocked him down) but, it took several follow-ups to clean up the kill. This all took place at about 40 to 50 yards. While cleaning the deer I pulled out two of the bullets from the body cavity. Both had barely peeled back and looked like a large (long) eraser. (will take picture of bullet tonight) Not one existed to my knowledge.

I am extremely disspointed in the caliber and performance of the round. Just wondering if this is typical?

I plan to shoot several other brands to try and find a different round. I know my gun shoot he winchester power point 150's well. Might start shooting them instead.

I had very bad luck with the leverevolutions in my .30-30

They shot well but performed like crap. I shot 3 deer with them with no exits.

170gr soft point round nose has been the best and most consistent performer in my experience.

I posted a picture of the deer - as you can see there are no exits on the side shown (shot on other side). I know the .30-.30 is not a fast bullet, but I still expected a behind the sholder shot at 50 yards to poke right through the deer. It would be hard to trial a deer with a tiny entry wound only.

Have you had luck getting any other rounds to exit?

I've killed probably 15 deer with a .30-30....always used 150 gr or 170 gr powerpoints. Lost 2-3 but I took poor shots.

I'd go with the powerpoints or softpoints

Damn. I figured a brush gun would punch through anything.
ETA: Awesome deer.

I had great results shooting deer with a 30-30. Definitely the bullets. I always shot reloads though.

I like the Marlin .30-.30. I kinda wish I had the .308 now. I agree that it is most likely the bullets. It's ironic becuase the Hornady bullets are the more expensive bullet as compared to the Win. or Rem. Thanks for the advice. I dont like shooting a bullet that won't exit.

Thanks, he was young only 3.5 years. Would have been a dam good deer in a few years, but shot him on the property line. Wasn't even a shooter at our camp (missed main beam by .5 inchs).

I have never shot a 30-30. I would like to own one one day. What is the typical capacity on it?

FWIW though, when deciding on what caliber and or style rifle to get for deer hunting several years ago, I heard "I will never hunt deer with a 30-30 again" from multiple hunters due to lost deer.

I threw those hornady lever bullets in trash! I lost two does with my 45-70 shot both at 30-40 yards. Blood everywhere but never found both deer "swapped to federal hollow points" then i had the hornady for my 30-30 shot 8 point at 50 yds and ended up trailing that deer for 3 hrs. Found it alive, shot again and it jumped and ran another 70 yards! Neither bullet passed through! Will never use again! Went and bought winchester power point hollows for it!

Mako,
Nice deer! I don't have any personal experience w/ the 30-30 or the 30-30 LeverEvolution ammo. IIRC, the LeverEvolution's main advantage over the traditional 30-30 loads is higher velocity, hence flatter trajectory. If you don't need either of these, I'd stick w/ traditional 30-30 loads. The 30-30 is a fine close-moderate range deer hunting cartridge. After over 100 years of field use and experience loading 30-30 ammo, the ammo makers have it pretty well worked out. Grab ya a box each of 150 and 170 RN 30-30 ammo from Rem or Win and hunt w/ whatever shoots best in your gun.

I just shoot the plane Jane Remington core lokt bullets and haven't had any problems with them.

BP, I think my Marlin is a 4+1

I have dropped a decent buck with Rem core lokt. I shot a doe with the Leverevolution round and needed a follow-up shot to bring it down. Not a fan.

Winchester super x power points in either 150 or 170 is the way to go. I've never lost anything with either one.

No I used 170gr remington core-locks until I got sucked into the squishy tipped bullets thing.

The .30-30 was made to do it's job with 150 or 170 grain soft point round nose bullets. It works well with either of those (or anything in between) as these bullets are designed to perform well at the moderate velocities you get from the .30-30

I like the 170gr bullets because I never shoot farther than 50 or 60 yards with mine. I'm currently shooting 150gr hollow points because my rifle LOVES them, but I'll be going to federal blue box 170gr SPRN for next year.
