Spinoff question from dry fire thread...

I'm old school and have always been told to never dry fire any weapon unless you had a spent cartridge in the chamber for the firing pin to hit. Now my question is: When you store any weapon for a LONG time, is it better to dry fire the weapon and leave it that way? The reason being that the firing pin spring isn't compressed for years or a long time which will mean it is more likely to retain its spring tension. Before the boating accident I had long guns that had not been fired or chambered in 40 years. Does that long period of firing spring compression jeopardize the spring tension???

Why is this? What makes it dependent on the gun/rifle? Would WWII military rifles fall into this category? More specifically, WWI and WWII British SMLE .303's? Some of those rifles haven't been chambered in DECADES. How about modern shotguns?

all of my stuff that could help fend off zombys were kept loaded, most were in the safe, before it sunk of course... should i have taken the one out of the chambers and let her off in front of the other rounds?

Wonderin the same thing myself, OG. Just don't know how long that firing spring will retain its tension memory, or if that's something that I need to even worry about. Not a big deal to just go ahead and dry fire em on a spent cartridge or shell, then put em up for another 40 years or however long it might be...
